IMO id has really broken up the Quake community. Quake Live puts players from certain regions, like in South East Asia, at a disadvantage, because we have a higher ping than the locals of that region regardless of what server we play on, and any pro Quake 3 player knows even a fraction of a second affects your prediction on rockets. On the other hand, while I vastly prefer and love Quake 3 CPMA more than QL, there's no solid community that plays it on a regular basis.

I know many Malaysians and Singaporeans who would jump at the first opportunity to play Quake 3 again. What I don't understand is why, in spite of this huge gathering, id persists on refusing to give us our servers. At one point, we had a server based in Singapore, but they shut it down for some reason, even though there was a huge uproar about it.

So, we can't do anything about Quake Live servers thanks to the idiocy of the people who swung the axe. The only way is to revive Quake 3, but again that's a big issue. The easiest way to get Quake 3 is through Steam, and they're selling it at $20. Would I pay that amount? Probably. But not everyone would, and that's my concern.

I have thought of hoarding Quake 3 Steam keys when (or rather, if) it goes on sale, but that last report by RPS on some guy who helped gift lots of games to his friends and then getting banned makes me want to reconsider this. Is there another viable alternative where I can make Quake 3 available cheaply to those who want it? Last I checked, retail shops aren't even selling Quake 3 Gold anymore. It's like a shrewd scheme by id to get everyone to join Quake Live, which I'd more than gladly do if they'd only let me. Fuckers.
i keep waiting for quake 3 to go on sale on steam, but it doesn't seem to want to. Quake live is fun and all but the regular game would be so much better.
I was never any good at Quake 3. My reflex reaction to seeing a rocket come at me is to try and catch it..
This ia Quake 3 Arena right? That game was epic. There's a lot of games that should have their communities revived but people always go for the newer, sleeker games which is upsetting. There's nothing wrong with a Good Old Game
What's the closest server and lowest ping you can get?

We don't have any server in our country, but any European server gives me 40-70 ping which is almost LAN play.
Quake Live feels very weird and different to me, plus they removed the gore, why...
I was eyeballing Quake 3 Arena on Steam today myself...

This is really wierd because I did that myself. Also I have been watching a few lets play on Youtube this week.

I sence a conspiracy...
You could try Open Arena. It is/ was a free libre content project for Q3A. If I didn't have a 7 year deep backlog I'd still be playing it.

At least 100. Never, ever, below 100 for me.

We actually live quite near each other. If only we can get more people to get the game, it'll solve all our problems, because I know Multiplay.co.uk hosts Quake 3 servers in Singapore. But what's the point if there aren't players on the server, playing on a regular basis?

I am more than willing to fork out the money for it (referring to the server rental fees). But darn it, id just doesn't want to sell Quake 3 for a reasonable price anymore. I cannot convince my casual gamer friends to buy it if id doesn't sell it for the price that it should be valued at, even if I'm willing to pay that amount myself.

WTF id...

My fingers are crossed that someday, it will end up on GOG.com, because $10 for Quake 3 is enticing enough to scrape together a small but closely-knit community.

Me too. Would it be possible to hoard serial numbers without having to login to my account though? I've never tried this before. I'm not a fan of Steam, but I have games on Steam I haven't played, and people in my Friends list that I talk to on a regular basis, and I'd be pissed if I got into trouble because of this.

Thing about Q3A is that there's also nothing like it, nothing that can replace it. I'm not talking about it being better than other games, which then becomes a matter of opinion; I'm talking about the strafe jumping, the air control and the smoothness of the game. It's basically a game where you're a floating camera that can shoot stuff, and throws everything remotely believable in a video game out of the window. And that's what makes it so good. CPMA only refines this further. Rocket jumping in q3dm17 to the quad damage and landing in the teleporter to grab the red armour in one single jump is always beautiful. The weapon combinations are perfect, and no one weapon is better than the other if the situation demands specific needs. Which other game requires you to time your trick jumps just right so as to barely land on the ledge on top?

Quake 4 is probably the closest to Q3A, even more than OpenArena and Nexuiz, but I wasn't able to find q3dm17, q3dm1 and q3tourney1-5 on it, so that was disappointing. It's not just a Good Old Game. It's the only one of its kind out there, even though there are many fast-paced deathmatch games already. It's like, Blackshot can replace CS, and Modern Warfare 3 will replace World at War, but nothing's felt like Quake 3 for me yet.

Thats the best thing I've heard. I used to have loads of 4 player fun when I foundit for the Dreamcast. But no matter what format you play on it's still one of the best shooters i've played
it will go @ 75% off three times at least on steam summer seal aka sales , quake-con event time, year end sales . i got the quake collection during quake con 2 years back , awesome deal @ 7$ but no quake 4 , this time the pack even has quake 4
