IMO id has really broken up the Quake community. Quake Live puts players from certain regions, like in South East Asia, at a disadvantage, because we have a higher ping than the locals of that region regardless of what server we play on, and any pro Quake 3 player knows even a fraction of a second affects your prediction on rockets. On the other hand, while I vastly prefer and love Quake 3 CPMA more than QL, there's no solid community that plays it on a regular basis.
I know many Malaysians and Singaporeans who would jump at the first opportunity to play Quake 3 again. What I don't understand is why, in spite of this huge gathering, id persists on refusing to give us our servers. At one point, we had a server based in Singapore, but they shut it down for some reason, even though there was a huge uproar about it.
So, we can't do anything about Quake Live servers thanks to the idiocy of the people who swung the axe. The only way is to revive Quake 3, but again that's a big issue. The easiest way to get Quake 3 is through Steam, and they're selling it at $20. Would I pay that amount? Probably. But not everyone would, and that's my concern.
I have thought of hoarding Quake 3 Steam keys when (or rather, if) it goes on sale, but that last report by RPS on some guy who helped gift lots of games to his friends and then getting banned makes me want to reconsider this. Is there another viable alternative where I can make Quake 3 available cheaply to those who want it? Last I checked, retail shops aren't even selling Quake 3 Gold anymore. It's like a shrewd scheme by id to get everyone to join Quake Live, which I'd more than gladly do if they'd only let me. Fuckers.
