How recent?
Which Free Ultima game is that? I there's at least 3 - Ultima 4 and the 2 Worlds of Ultima games - Martian Dreams and the jungle one with teh b00bs on the cover - assuming you mean 4 then the 2 Worlds of.. games are a bit more recent
For general turn based isometric RPGs Arcanum, Fallout 1 and 2, Geneforge series or anything else by Spidersweb and D&D Temple of Elemental Evil are probably your best bets...
Wasteland is not more recent just just as awesome.

If not, I suppose there's something ultima-ish in the Baldur series or Eschalon books ?

Check out Avernum, Avadon & Geneforge. Not identical, obviously, but they have a lot of similarities

Eschalon would have been a lot more ultima-like if it was party based. I don't really consider Baldur's Gate to be all that Ultima-like.

Wait for Divinity: Original Sin

There's also this remake in the Dungeon Siege engine

http://www.u5lazarus.com/
Divine: Divinity is the closest to Ultima VII I've ever seen (Ultima VII is generally considered the best Ultima). And as bussinrounds said, Divinity: Original Sin would be the one to wait for. It'll be sparkling new.

It really depends on what criterion you focus on. And what, in Ultima, made you most joyous.

Turn-based map exploration does it for me.

True. If that's the part the OP enjoyed the most, I would by the way recommend Ultima 7 above almost any other game. It's not new, but it is still one of the best games in that regard.
There is an upgrade patch for Ultima IV
http://www.moongates.com/u4/upgrade/upgrade.htm
It adds better graphics and, most importantly, music to the DOS version, i really recommend it. There are also console ports with better graphics, but they suffer from other cuts, so I'd only recommend them for curiosity.
Now what i remember, Legends of Grimrock is an example of what i look for
Check out the suggestions in this thread. A few of them are similar to Ultima.

Oh, well, that's something entirely different ... Did you mean games like Ultima Underworld? How recent are we talking about?

I agree with you on that. Most people say Driftmoon is the closest to Ultima VII, but Driftmoon is a bit more Sierra-ish.
I would say, however, that Divine:Divinity is to me what Ultima VIII should have been.

If you haven't played Ultima VII, trust me. It's well worth your $6. It's not just a game, it's a world. Yes, you can have adventures and kill baddies, but you can also bake bread, pick pumpkins, thresh wheat, get menial jobs, and even work as Britannia Vice turning in drugs to Lord British's apothecary for money.
As for Ultima VIII and Ultima IX, just keep in mind VIII is an action RPG (in essence one of the predecessors to Diablo) and IX is a 3D adventure game rather than an RPG which is loosely based on Ultima.

Oh, you want the party first person view dungeon crawl.

There are many good ones.

Try Might and Magic X for a brand new game (only on Steam I think).

Try Legend of Grimrock like you said. It's a good one.

For some older titles, the Might and Magic games (not Heroes of Might and Magic, just Might and Magic 1-8). Some love Stonekeep but I had it when it was new and I didn't care for it. You can also try The Elder Scrolls I and II (available free on Bethesda's website) for some very good games (those are first person RPGs, not party).

Have fun!

I agree that Daggerfall is a reasonably fun dungeon crawler. I know it it supposed to be an open world RPG but I only really enjoyed it when I was clearing one dungeon after the other.

Also LAND OF LORE 1, I'lve only played the first few sections of it but it is fantastic and has aged extremely well.
