darthspudius: Why would ANYONE main copy be the ps2? I know it was a tad better than the PC version but it was still a pretty shit port. The ps2 and original PC versions should just be binned. They did not do the game justice and there is absolutely no reason why anyone can't pick up one of the better versions these days.

The main consoles Gamecube, Wii, PS3, XBOX 360 all have excellent, affordable versions. The same version that is coming to Steam today.

JohnnyDollar: Have you been keeping up with it leading up to now? I know you like the RE4 game, but does it look like they've done a good job with this new PC HD version to you?
Correction: Resident Evil 4 came out on GameCube first, but I waited for a PS2 port. I remember now!

I know the Wii version came second and gave motion controls. That one apparently was a lot of fun. The HD versions released in the Resident Evil anthology on PS3/360 seemed to be a bit visually superior with some tweaks but not enough for me to invest in it, as it was also sold separately on the PSN. My guess is the PC version is everything those PS3/360 ports are and a bit more, so maybe even the "definitive" edition.

The interesting part is this was the first Resident Evil I really got into, missing out on the classic survival horror versions beforehand. It's also been the one to be ported to the most systems and the first (classic) Resident Evil to come to PC, so excluding 5 and 6. If they're working backwards, maybe we can expect the originals officially released on PC, or at least the GameCube remake of the original or Resident Evil Zero.

It's definitely a great game and I wouldn't doubt it will be the best version, as long as they don't screw up on controls or programming.

I thought the first 2 were pretty good. I never played 3. I played 2 quite a few times.

There were PC versions released for 1&2, and I'm pretty sure for 3 as well. I think the whole series has come to PC. Not HD remakes, if that's what you mean, but originally they have.

Ah good to know. Missed the PC release of the originals then. But then I've missed the PC releases of most games, hence why I'm an avid GOGer ;D
A quote for the German members that are concerned with it being censored:

Q: I heard rumors of the German version being censored. Is this true?
A: No. RE4 fans in Germany can enjoy RE4 in its full, uncensored g(l)ory. However, Assignment Ada and Mercenaries unfortunately is not included in the German version. Separate Ways, Movie Viewer, and Ada's Report ARE included and unlockable.

As an aside, the Handcannon becomes available when you beat the main story in Professional difficulty while completing Separate Ways unlocks the Chicago Typwriter.
Maybe. It was a great game on the Playstation 2 (I don't know what darthspudius didn't like about it), and it was an even better game on the Wii with the motion controls. There's no reason that it shouldn't be a great game on the PC too, but there are so many great games on the PC that I haven't already played two times...

Still missing 0 and Code: Veronica, IIRC. Plus a bunch of shooters and crap nobody cares about

True, I thought about posting and correcting myself since the statement is actually false. :P I might as well go ahead and do that now.

Correction:

RE1-6, Revelations, and Operation Raccoon City have been released on PC at one time or another. I believe that's right.

This game is probably the most praised game that I think is a piece of shit. Horrible controls, bad level design, stupid storyline and escort bullshit. Also a huge pet peeve for me was giving me a weapon upgrade system that I poured a ton of time, thought and game money into only to then give me better versions of those weapons that my upgrades didn't count towards. WHAT?

I fucking hated this game.
Well, it doesn't sound like the Ultimate HD Edition has surround sound. Stereo only. I'm not sure yet how important positional audio is with this title yet. Even if it's not too important, the absence of surround sound in a game of this type will make the experience a bit duller. :/
I've noticed an issue where the fps will drop too much. It's not because of any high requirements for the game. Everything is running nice and smooth and then all of the sudden the frames drop real low for a few seconds for no apparent reason. I've noticed it happening more when using the 30 fps option than the 60 fps one.

I started running the game in windowed mode and that seems to have eliminated it. Anyone having this problem may want to try that.

Btw, is anyone else here at GOG playing this version? :P

The controls are a bit too clunky for my liking. They released a patch recently that supposedly improves the mouse, and they have another patch in beta now that includes customizing QTE.

The audio in this version is pathetic. It's all one channel. You have no idea of what direction any sound is coming from.

I never got past the first village when I put it down. I'll wait and see what future patches do. I might be willing to put up with the controls alone, but if I can't get some surround sound either on top of that, then I'm not sure if it's worth a complete playthrough.

I hold good positional game audio in a higher regard than your average gamer probably does, granted, but mono is pathetic however you slice it for a title like this.

Do you think the audio is any better than the PS2/PS3 versions? It was really bad back when I played the "HD" PS3 version, a lot of the sound effects were muffled.

Anyway, I have no idea why they rushed this port.. doesn't seem like there was any reason to.

Re-releasing an old game on Steam is about making a quick buck. The longer spent porting it the less money you make.

If that were the reason, I'd have thought they'd port it much sooner.

Probably not. I recall doing a search about it when I first started playing and landed on a page where they were discussing the original PC release and the console versions not having true surround sound. It was mentioned that some of the versions had Dolby Pro Logic II, but that's not real 5.1/7.1 surround.
