Well, A month or so ago I played Notch's "Prelude of the Chambered," and was pretty inspired by the game's condensing of a dungeon crawler into a little half-hour play experience. I decided I wanted to try doing something similar, but with an FPS. The result is Pit: The Bite-Sized Shooter, which I just released about 2 minutes ago:

http://sandbox.yoyogames.com/games/190009-pit---the-bite-sized-shooter#

Each level has a distinctive visual style, aided by a minimalist mono-color scheme. Combat is fast-paced and arcadey, with lots of projectiles to dodge and enemies to mow down. I'm quite proud of the sound work I've done, as well as the visual effects that accompany firing weapons. The average playthrough time from testing has been around 20 minutes.

FEATURES:
- Short "bite-sized" campaign made up of 8 different levels, each with its own distinctive flavor

- Visceral sound design and visual effects bring gun battles to glorious low-resolution life

- Hyper low system requirements and a small file size make it easily portable for play in computer labs and low-level home computers

- 5 unique weapons and 7 deadly enemies

- Deep scoring system and many secrets lend replayability

- Fun cheats, including the ability to wield "golden" versions of each weapon, that come with everything from increased firepower to the ability to destroy the environment

- Full mouse control

I'd really appreciate it if you, my fellow GOGers, would try it out and maybe spread the word around if you like it. And since the game is so short, I'd also really appreciate it if you saw it through to the end :3.

Also, post your high scores here, just for fun.
EDIT: here's a screenie

lol probably. I can get through it in something like 15 minutes, and my "testers" got through in around 20-25 minutes.

erm...I don't think. I don't actually know how to even go about doing that :P
I may be being a bit dense here, but how do I use the healthpacks? I can pick them up but I haven't found the key that actually activates them.
Sounds and looks like 8bit Killer. Will check this out mate

In all seriousness, I think you mentioned on your other thread that you made this in GameMaker; there's actually an OS X port of GameMaker, but the catch is that it's not free, and there's no upgrade path between the Mac and Windows versions. Further more, GameMaker for Mac is on v7 and isn't compatible with v8.1 files.

It would really be awesome to see a Linux version but I don't think GameMaker works on Linux. In any case I'd be willing to bet that your game would work on WINE.
27 min combing every level.

What does the perforator do? Is there a way to annihilate the acid ghosts? Could the enemy shots be a different color because they're nearly invisible in some situations? When's the sequel coming?

perforator = just a really powerful shotgun-like weapon

there is no way to completely kill the phantoms.

I hadn't noticed that the enemy shots were invisible in some situations, but I'll look into it and see about fixing it.

No idea when a sequel might be coming :3

The white level. White puffs tend to blend in.

ok. I'll take a look and see if there's anything I can do to fix it.

Possibly a black outline, but well see how it looks.
Oh, and being the sort of person I am, I sent a link to Notch. It was, after all, his game that inspired it.

We'll see if I even get a response :3

well, I seriously doubt that the game will be popular enough to warrant spending money on another version of gamemaker for a Mac version. Sorry :(
Hey, I just wanted to chime in and let you know that I enjoy your game (actually more so than Prelude of the Chambered). I haven't beat it yet, had to quit yesterday before reaching the end, but I intend to try again. I especially love the sound effects you chose, they suit the game very well. On the big PC monitor it was a bit hard to look at without feeling dizzy, but for my netbook it's perfect (although the FPS might be better on the PC because it wasn't consistent all the time). Thanks for sharing!
