Roman5: Damn right I'm gonna dismiss it, I'm not even thinking about buying it until they release a "GOTY" edition with all of the hundreds dollars worth of DLC that will be there, EA and Bioware are out of their minds
protip: promotional DLC tends not to be included in complete or GotY editions. the Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition isn't actually complete. and so far, there has not been a ME2 complete edition.

Roman5: Why I think the game is going to be bad I already explained in my thread, if you want to continue this conversation:
in other news, people who've actually played the game think it's fantastic and cannot wait for it to be released.

but what do they know compared to you...
Yeah, it would be nice for all games to be Good, but them's the breaks.

Maybe GOG only has a certain number of games to choose from, and if they release all the Good ones first, we'll then have months of just the Bad ones....

crazy_dave: I agree GOG should maybe improve how quickly they order the reviews, but I am still against restricting the reviews to people who have bought the game by virtue of the site. We are not a first-run site, many people will own copies and played these games awhile ago.
The problem is that the GOG releases are often plagued with technical difficulties which may not have been encountered when the game was first released. That's why its the GOG version of the game that needs to be reviewed.

Sometimes, but I think gameplay reviews by themselves are helpful.

drachehexe: I would agree with that. A "true" review points out the reasons why you like or dislike a particular game.

One solution to the review issue is maybe a minimum number of words needed for a review to be posted, like 100 or something. Of course that could lead to "This game sucks really bad!" being repeated 20 times.
avatar
crazy_dave: Yeah although then you really, really could mark them as spam and there would be no argument that GOG would be right to take them down just as they could take down "This game was so awesome!" repeated a hundred times. I dunno a word count might help a little in both directions and I think is better than the "only if you bought it" restriction.
Actually, yeah... a word count would actually be pretty darn effective. Not foolproof...as someone pointed out, there's nothing to stop you from just posting "THIS GAME SUCKS" 100 times... but I can see it sort of ushering people more toward writing a good review. "Aww man, I don't have enough words...what else can I say?"
Seems this has become a worse problem than it was before.
This is the second recent thread about this sort of thing, and I agree.

anyway, I remember complaining about the opposite in October, but the problem is still the same. People pushing the review star rating up and down randomly giving either 1- or 5-star, 3 word reviews. Really doesn't help anyone to decide whether to buy the game or not.

Sequiro: While a game may not be widely considered good, there is usually somebody that may have enjoyed the title and will be quite happy to see it here, DRM free and working with new OSes.
This. (although "working for with new OSes" can be a bit bumpy at times)

Catshade: .. a few games of questionable quality such as Messiah...
Hey...!

Catshade: ...and Lionheart.
Hey...!!

I like those two! :-D
Different tastes are different, that's it.

I see no reason for people to be mad about a release, just positively wait for the next release.

I like GOG as a repository of ALL old games, be it good, average, or bad games... What may be bad for you, is good for me.
1. The fact that anyone can see such 'delights' as Empire Earth 3 in the catalog and think that this is the first 'bad' release is kind of hilarious.

2. As others have said, posting a 1 star review with no information beyond your acting like an ass = stupid.

On the flip side, enough with the nostalgic fan boy types and their gushing "THIS GAME WAS THE BEST EVARZ WHEN IT PLAYED IT 13 YEARS AGO!" crap, too. That's equally obnoxious and stupid.

Wait!!!! You liked MOO3?????? So it's your fault!!!!
Question is, what is definition of a Good Old Game? (i do realise it depends on taste and perception but still)....have to admit some of the choices in my eyes is like 'WTF is that?..Why??" hahaha

orcishgamer: Wait!!!! You liked MOO3?????? So it's your fault!!!!
Yeshhhh, MoO3 is sitting on my shelf. :)

Another good example of a bad game being on GOG, for completionist's sake, is RollerCoaster Tycoon 3. If I can have it here, running in Win7 and drm-free, why the hell not?!?

(PS: I didn't played MoO3 yet)
I think a case can be made for just getting rid of reviews entirely.

At the very least, have YouTube-style Like/Dislike buttons.

Plus, the catalog pages need links to their respective forums. If people want to know if the game's worth getting, they can read the game's subforum.

They do have a report spam button which if one implemented a minimum word count and someone repeated suXors a 100 times, one could justify using it. Under the current system, I think GOG is unwilling to use it against stupid, pointless reviews that say a single sentence of either simply "Do Not Buy" or "Awesome get it" probably because the people in question would cry censorship. That it's censorship against stupidity rather than a bias for/against a game would fall on deaf ears.

They do have was this review helpful yes/no - essentially the same thing, but the ordering of reviews can be wonky in the beginning as I presume GOG doesn't want all reviews to disappear quickly in order people to get a chance to vote on them. but in these instances it's left truly pointless reviews on top. :/

That would be helpful, I agree, and is an oft-requested feature.

It's okay, you don't have to play it, just hit "end turn" and it plays itself.
