I buy Kindle, B&N, Baen, Smashwords, etc. Then I strip the DRM out with Calibre plugins. Whatever happens with accounts, I still have my ebooks.

hedwards: I'm surprised that people still buy Kindles because for a while they had some pretty astonishingly low customer satisfaction ratings on it. I like the product page for the Nook I'm getting. The first feature No Ads. Power adapter included. a subtle dig at Amazon for having ads on it's lowest priced model and no longer including a power adapter.
The lowest price model had ads? Who would voluntarily pay for such a thing?!
Amazon have always had the BEST customer service of any company in my experience. One woman spouting a one-sided story does not change my mind about that.

Yeah, Amazon does that now with they're low cost model. I'm sure for some people who might not be able to afford it, that extra $20 of makes sense. But it's beyond tacky IMHO, and these readers are pretty durable as long as you protect the face from being smashed.

Bear in mind that this is amazon.co.uk which has a different set of managers handling customer service, they apparently don't have as good of a reputation as amazon.com does.

That being said, of course you should wait to make up your mind, it's easy to come to the wrong conclusion if there's been some miscommunication. And on the face of it, it's ridiculous for them to take all the books away without either compensating the user or giving a detailed explanation and justification for the action.

It's more or less impossible to fight such a thing if they won't give you any information about why.

I only have good things to say about Amazon.co.uk custumer service, and this doesn't change my mind but it does get me worried.

Fictionvision: TL:DR version: Lady has her kindle remotely wiped and her account closed from Amazon. She contacts support and gets nowhere when asking why as they give her the run-around saying she had a previously closed account. http://www.bekkelund.net/2012/10/22/outlawed-by-amazon-drm/
Short reply = Bullshit. long reply; I feel sorry for this person, This is way I hate intrusive DRM and Amazon. I hope she brings legal action against Amazon. This is also the main reason why I shop here as opposed to Steam. I have a small collection of games on Steam, but (if they ever go under for some unforeseen reason) I guess I'll get the same result.
I'll just pipe in and say that my only experience with Amazon was a complete disaster, and I have since decided never to do business with them again.

Stories like this shock me somewhere in the realm of not at all.
That's just evil and should be illegal.

It's quite possible that under the UK Computer Misuse Act, it actually does constitute a criminal offence on Amazon's part. I've had my own dealings with Amazon.co.uk support and they really are useless fuckers. Amazon.de isn't much better, although I must admit I have had some positive experiences with the German support as well.

Not cool, gog support was more then helpful though :P
Sadly, usually, the bigger the company, the worse customer support is. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually hire monkeys in their support :P
Strangely, Amazon (in my limited experience) has some of the best customer support out there. For me it has been fast, easygoing and honestly pleasant to deal with.

I couldn't say, because in four years, I've not had to use them at all. :-)

A telling thing, I would say, especially as my dealings with the entirely useless Steam Support have always been DRM and region-lock related.

Same here. Best customer support on the web.
She didn't use Calibre to un-DRM her books and save them in case something happens with her account? Pretty naive.
