stg83: But, if they were ever capable to do it on spec why did they set such a huge initial goal of 600K on Kickstarter in the first place. More traditional funding sources would be publishers and I don't think the big ones would be that interested in investing in an HD remake of a cult classic PC only game from the 90s hence the whole reason for coming to KS in the first place. The other option could be Steam Early Access like the guys making Carmageddon Reincarnation are doing, but I really don't like that model because some games are just stuck there for years on end before seeing the light of day. I am not trying to pessimistic but just curious as I would still very much like them to make the game any way they can.
The rise of Kickstarter and similar sites has created a kind of goldrush mentality unfortunately, wherein developers and inventors see it as the easy path to getting funding. It is far less risky (to them) than more conventional funding sources, and when they see the huge amounts that some projects bring in, they become unrealistically optimistic about their own chances (as well as their own budgets).
Clearly they have done a lot of work on the redo already, and they are leveraging a huge amount of pre-existing assets that most game projects would have to create from scratch - models, skeletal animations, voice acting, musical score, even the game flow and design, all of this is done already. There is no reason they couldn't produce a beta version of the redo using these assets and have that become the foundation for a new funding scheme. The idea that Kickstarter alone can save this project is delusional to an almost religious degree, and I for one hope the devs don't fall prey to that fallacy.
