AzureKite: It'd be nice of them to actually patch out online check completely. It 's pretty much obsolete for a 2009 game.
Most games are only patched within a few months of the game's release; after that point the publisher wants to devote all effort to the sequel, so any remaining bugs and DRM will be there forever (barring a GOG release). BioWare have a well-established tradition of leaving annoying DRM in place--Neverwinter Nights' Premium Modules still require an online check at launch (except for the selection included with the Diamond Edition) so those adventures will be lost when the activation server goes down.
