CaptainGyro: King Arthur collection for $19.
avatar
Taleroth: Must... resist...

It's a curiosity that's so tempting.

Edit: Damnit.
I meant all those games I mentioned cost a total of $19, not just King Arthur collection. The King arthur collection was only $4.50

I didn't think that's what you meant. But someone else buying King Arthur after I'd stared at it and considered it a couple of times pushed me over the edge.

Fantasysci5: *headdeak* I had talked myself out of Guild Wars, but with lots of people here saying it's great, I'm tempted again. Ar, is the stroy/characters any good?

And I'm sorry I keep asking that about every other game, I'm just horrible at making my own decisions. :P
Yes and yes. You have the 3 campaigns + expansion which are all self-contained stories and are good quality (mostly). I'll go in chronological order for the campaigns + expansion.

Prophecies has you playing a person from Ascalon who is fighting a war against a feline race known as the Charr. Stuff goes wrong and in typical RPG fashion you are traveling around the world for various reasons. Saying anymore will spoil it. By far the most 'epic' and quality campaign of them all.

Factions didn't happen. The story in this one is terrible but is worth a play through just for the setting and because it is the shortest campaign.

Nightfall has you stopping the return of a dark god who wants to bring night on the world.

Eye of the North is an odd one because it was meant to branch Guild Wars + Guild Wars 2 together. The campaign revolves around getting rid of the Destroyer who is causing all sorts of problem in Northern Tyria.

After this you have a bunch of free content called Guild Wars: Beyond. This is mini-campaigns that add a lot of content and further branch the Guild Wars + Guild Wars 2 gap. The two parts released now wrap up stuff after the events of Prophecies and Eye of the North.

As you can see Arena Net really cares about the lore/story/characters and the game is a testament to that. There is also a demo on the main site if you are still unsure.

If I had the money I would just flat out gift you the game if you can't decide because this game is that good.

Fantasysci5: snip
lol you already got most of the information you need from the others.

Prophecies is the main game, Factions is meh, Nightfall is gorgeous.
The main aspect of the game is the group instancing, which basically gives you and your group your own area to explore without worrying about other players harassing you. Also, if you dont want to play with others, you can use henchmen and later on, Heroes. Heroes, unlike henchmen, can be customized and are unlocked via quests. Also, you can dual class. For example, my main is an Archer/Necromancer that specializes in causing massive AoE damage in short time.
Another thing is the PvP, which is very competitive. You can make a PvP character the moment yo make a character and be at the max level with almost all of the skills possible.
Guilds can have Guild Wars. -_-
The community is GREAT (except for a few dicks) and very willing to help out.
Just get it ASAP.

Well, technically you don't start with all the skills. You actually have to unlock them first on your account, which becomes a tedious (and expensive) task for a first character unless you're willing to pay for unlock packs.

IMO Prophecies is like the least useful expansion nowadays because it...is...just...so...slow unless you do a lot of sequence breaking. I think the only good thing about Prophecies is that you can unlock a lot of free skills if you are motivated to do so.

I personally like to start in Factions because you can get a set of full max armor from monster drops after you complete the third mission and the attribute quests in Factions are easier and faster to complete than in the other games. Still not a good place to start if its your first character though (Nightfall is better for that).
Deal done.

rooshandark8: i will give a 5.99 gog for a 4.99 steam game.
anyone interested?
Check your pm, I'll try to help out if I don't conk out in a few minutes :P
I'm severely on the fence about buying the AI War bundle.

The game seems fantastic, polished and unique, I've played just the tutorials (well, there's a lot in them, actually) from the demo and I loved it, the developer is the kind I'd really like to support (massive post-launch support, expansions that actually add a lot, deeply integrated with it's community, you can get a DRM-Free version from them at any time, etc.), and the discount is nice (if the price eventually halves and they make a 75% off sale, the difference won't reach a dollar).

Yet, I'm just afraid it might be way too hardcore for me, or that I may never have time to play it properly, with my college ending this year and my backlog, consisting of at least 70 games already. Also, being an indie/old games loving brazillian, I may never find anyone to play co-op with at acceptable ping rates. With money usually being a problem for me, I can't afford to buy a game just to support the developers if I won't ever play it (though I do have enough money at the moment, seeing as this sale has been underwhelming for me). Yet, sales... Damn those Digital Distribution sales!

Can anyone give me more reasons either to buy it or not to? Before I just throw a random.org roll.

EDIT: Okay, two hours later, after reading a lot in the official forums, I just gave up and bought it. Now I hope the last days of sales aren't very good, because I just have ENOUGH ALREADY!

Broke down and bought the King Arthur collection. I'm hoping it fills the Total War void that has been empty since CA screwed up Empire.

slash11: It should be renamed to Steam rent 2011 thread ^^.
avatar
orcishgamer: I can't believe I'm coming to the defense of Steam... but for 2 bucks or whatever that pretty much is a rental price. I'm all for criticizing a 50 dollar game purchase on Steam (I don't have any games on Steam in fact), but I see why people buying a game for less than the cost of a pint genuinely don't give a crap that Steam might take it away some day.
for 2-3 bucks of course.....
That is cheap enough to rent a game.
avatar
oasis789: monkey island 1 and 2 SE for 7.50 look pretty tempting...
Like me, you should have bought it on the 26th of December, when the bundle was on sale for $3.75 :( I doubt we're going to see such a promotion even on GOG (though then again, I'd be happy if you prove me wrong! :p)...

I bought gw complete collection back in 2008, played it for a little while then had to give up because I had absolutely no time for any hobby, and then too many months passed. Now with all of you praising it so much i feel like playing it again. I started in prophecies because a friend told me it's the best one to start with due to the story. I vaguely remember that at some point i felt like i should play it with other players (i had a few chars to experiment with classes, all in prophecies but played mainly as elementalist/mesmer), and that was something i really wanted to avoid (i played a mmorpg for 2.5-3 years and i call that period the dark ages of my life, it shall never happen again). So maybe if i started it again i could try starting in nightfall since i think i get access to heroes much earlier, thus eliminating any need for other people, am i correct? I really don't remember, and this is the fast way since you're discussing it XD Do i miss anything if i start there in terms of the whole experience as far as the story is concerned? Because i remember being told that if you start with prophecies you always retain a special feeling because of some epic event in avalon, or something along those lines, and i want to experience the story in its full glory, even if it means postponing the playing again ^^;

edit: i know that my choice of classes was probably bad for the first char and sp, but i'm a sucker for spellcasters so i couldn't help it ^^;

Catshade: I've never met anyone who can provide a first-hand source or a direct quote of this claim.
avatar
Taleroth: I can't find a public quote at the moment, but there is a standard response from support for this question. Send in a ticket.

The actual Gabe quote has since been purged from the steam forums, being so old. Here is what is said.
"Unless there was some situation I don't understand, we would presumably disable authentication before any event that would preclude the authentication servers from being available. We've tested disabling authentication and it works."

Here is a support response. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_NRflXhEVEqs/TC5ShOl5TUI/AAAAAAAAAFs/azzZVUFtRuM/Capture2.PNG
Standard reassurance response to get you to continue using steam. It really has no merit however. If steam went down, they would need to get permission from every third party publisher to unlock the games. Hard to do if you go bankrupt.

Valve games would be unlocked for sure. That's not too bad. Everything else who knows?

I really don't understand what would prvent Valve to turn its Steam platform from online to offline. Then, it wouldn't touch the third parties games' executables.

Hehe, pirates already do it for games exclusively released on Steam, so that's no technical feat. The question would be: how to turn these games into things you could backup and reinstall at will.

Now that I could see. But the way Gabe described it, steam would be completely removed from the equation which he couldn't arbitrarily do without permission from the publishers.

Steam for life legally I guess.
