mystral: The thing is, multiplayer in Baldur's Gate was always an afterthought. Most people who play it have never used the multi, and some aren't even aware it exists.
While it can fun to play a coop campaign with friends, it's a bit boring for people who aren't playing the main character since they don't take part in dialog. Plus it's much more difficult to organize a multi campaign for BG than a solo playthrough, since the game is long and odds are the players won't often have free time at the same time.
Add the fact that many people actually like the NPCs you can add to your group, and it's no wonder people prefer to play solo.
Personally, I only played a BG multiplayer campaign once and that was to test out BGT with 3 other RL friends during summer holidays. I don't really have any interest in doing it again.
Yeah. But I'm willing to not be the Main Character as long as I can import my Fighter.
