jamyskis: The original Xbox's hard drive proved to be its downfall (with people copying games onto a modded Xbox's hard drive), and the 360 still used DVD, which was remarkably easy to pirate by the time of its release.
Like 95% of the consoles in Poland is X360 exactly because it's easy to pirate.

It's funny to then see PS3 games are the best selling games on consoles in Poland at the same time where hardly anybody owns PS3 and almost everybody have X360.

"Easy to pirate" is Microsoft's secret catchphrase since MS-DOS.

by the way, once again about PSX - when I had it as a kid, I remember cracking the console was pretty easy, but burning the games? Not so much. You had to burn them in 4X speed at max, and even if you did that, there was a possibility the console won't read it, will freeze all the time, sometimes you had to put in the disc several times for console to even recognize it etc etc.

Piracy on PS2 for first few years hardly existed as well - mostly to what jamyskis said - DVD burners and discs were expensive.

I don't understand why would anybody invest in such a thing. Or at the very least preorder.
Remember D3 launch and such ?
My console days are reaaaally far, and not coming back in the foreseeable (missed letters?) future.

vanchann: Since Windows 8 require a microsoft account, I was hoping they didn't do the same on their new console but I was almost sure they did!
To clarify, Windows 8/RT still fully support local accounts as always while also optionally supporting the new Microsoft account login for optional online features (syncing settings between systems, automatically logging into some apps, etc.) Everything else works as expected with a local account.

The Windows Store app does require a Microsoft account for downloading/updating apps but you can also choose to use a traditional local account for the Windows login and then have the Microsoft account only within the store app. You can also transition a Windows login account from one type to the other in a couple of clicks.

It looks like Xbox One won't give this level of flexibility regarding just how much of your user experience and data is tied to the internet.

I kind of understand what Microsoft is trying to do with xbox one. I know that many people are looking for a device which will consolidate home entertainment and simplify it. On the other hand i can't help but feel disappointed with xbox one. I don't watch TV (it hurts my brain), voice activation annoys me as much as touch screens (guess i'm to old for this shit) and i know that most of new features, especially TV, won't work in this part of Europe. Online game activation, no backwards compatibility, and online requirement (even if it isn't constant) just add insult to injury.
It saddens me because i was really looking forward to new xbox. I've grown to love the 360 over the years because of it's accessibility and the way it handled DRM and offline gaming. Unless something radically changes i can't see myself buying xbox one in near future if ever.

Well, it does not really require it. I run the silly beast in a VM (because I need to speak intelligently about it) and I've not tied it with my MS account. You do get some benefits if you do, such as calendar, outlook, skydrive integration but, honestly, I've got the Online Accounts feature on my Ubuntu machine that seamlessly integrates with Google (even Drive), Twitter, Facebook etc...

As for wishing this thing to fail, yeah, if it's this f'ed up, it will fail on its own. I bet Sony are rubbing their hands and laughing their arses off. From what I see though, MS either have trouble communicating or their right hand does not have a clue what the left one does (they lack coordination). Just take a look at this tweeter feed:

https://twitter.com/XboxSupport/status/336936354913071104

It's absolutely ridiculous and shameful for a company such as MS to send such confusing and conflicted messages. WTF is going on there?!

Ok, seriously what has happened to Microsoft over the past years? The first Xbox was a good gaming console and first launch of Xbox Live was ok. Then the 360 came with a redesigned dashboard and ads started popping up everywhere. Television, commercials and other stuff started appearing on a gaming console's dashboard. It started being slower to navigate and harder to get to the content you wanted to access.

Now this.... this so called gaming console called Xbox One. Firstly the name is ridiculous seeing it's the third generation of Xbox. I know it has to do with the philosophy of being one device to rule them all (sounds familiar?) but it's just silly to name it so. Second the dashboard has been turned into windows 8 metro style interface which is kinda useless on a device that does not use touch screen. Third, they put too much focus on TV, Kinect controlled interface and SmartGlass and not enough on what makes the new controller so special (60 inovations was mentioned if I remember correctly) or the games. 15 games ready for the launch window, 8 of which are new IP. Great.... but how many of those are Kinect based and how many of those are games in genres other than sports, racing and FPS?

Call of Duty : Ghosts has mentioned improvements brought to the new engine which are laughable. Many games have had those so called improvements implemented a long time ago. It's nothing new. Volumetric lighting? Been around for years. Self-casting shadows? Seen in Doom 3 in 2004. Sliding and shooting? Anyone remember Vanquish from 2010? Leaning around corners? Probably among the first games to implement this would be System Shock from 1994. In the graphics department this is not a next gen graphics game. Compare this to latest Crysis, Battlefield or Metro. So what is so next gen about this new Call of Duty?

Also they quickly added a crude way of recording gameplay to somehow match the share ability of the PS4. They briefly mentioned it and it was obvious that it was not planned to be added until after the PS4 reveal had demonstrated what can be done to improve the social media gaming experience.

In my opinion Microsoft blew it with the reveal of the Xbox One and all the advertising in the world cannot cover it's flaws anymore. It will slowly but surely lose the core gamer audience and will lose it's position as a gaming console in the following years.
I am not a console owner and after seeing the microsoft presentation i can safely say i wont be buying a console.

For a next gen console it as far as i cant ell seems to be underpowered and the tv thing is just a gimmick.

The always online thing is a disaster waiting to happen.

I think microsoft are heading for a big cliff financially if this does not sell and the fact a lot of people who would have bought it are now having 2nd thoughts gives some wirght to this.

bansama: The GOG forums have disappointed me today. A community of retro gamers many either as old, or older than I, and not one comment on how this looks like a 1980's Betamax video recorder? Shame on you.
And PS3 looks like a fax machine, and the Nintendo Nunchuk attachment on the Wiimote looks like penis :P

JollySovereign: It looks awful

I mean the whole conference was more centered on Kinect and...Television?

Microsoft people don't buy a VIDEO GAME console to watch television, they buy them to play VIDEO GAMES.

And of course EA now work exclusively with Microsoft as I thought they would after the Online Pass drop thing amongst other recent events for them. Why they would cut themselves off Playstation as well they might as well be shooting themselves in the foot but hey, now we have TWO horrible corporations conglomerated together instead of just one.

The Forza 5 'demonstration' was nothing but pre-rendered cgi so that was completely pointless being there. Quantum Break I don't know what to say. Steven Spielberg doing a Halo TV show...what is the point? I'd rather PLAY Halo but 343 aren't doing a very good job of that. And of course, Call of Duty brings nothing new to the table, just the same cash cow treatment it has always had since Modern Warfare.

And all of this on technology that will most likely be outdated by the time it is released with a load of other goodies like 'Always Online to play games'.

I hope this really damages Microsoft. They need a good slap across the face at this point.
Where is Bill Gates when you need him :(

That's one hell of a stylish fax machine. You may also wish to see a doctor if your penis looks like the Nunchuck attachment, as something may be horribly wrong with you. =P

This maybe?
I think the fact that modern PC games can't be resold has lowered their price, among many other things (like the indie boom due to digital delivery etc.). Or at least made it so that the price of PC games dips down quite fast.

I wonder if the same starts happening at least to Xbox One games more and more? After all, if people can't sell their own games to recoup money for newer games, they will simply either use less money per game, or buy less games.

Crosmando: Microsoft shareholders are running the show, the new xbawks should of had a giant head-start to the PS4 but Microsoft is obviously running scared from their shareholders who have likely never played a video game in their lives yet have paranoid delusions about piracy. It's the only way to explain how these alienated and out-of-touch decisions got made. It also probably has something to do with the fact that Ballmer runs Microsoft like a tyrant and tries to bully and manhandle the industry and squeeze as much money as possible from the market, no matter how much it alienates customers and generates discontent.

And yet, the new xbawks will probably still be a moderate success because they can always rely on dumb American college frat boys to buy the latest bro shooter game.
LOL so true
New xbox just shows how many dumb gamers are. :D There is nothing xbox one can do to convert pc gamer to xbox one. How bout that "xbox on" shout? lol..
