A great example of what can happen if devoted fans work together, has just hit the shelves on GOG.com.
The idea behind [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/jagged_alliance_2_wildfire]Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire's creation was for a group of fans to make a more realistic, better Jagged Alliance 2, and it's hard not to give them credit for doing just that. The game itself is a 2D , isometric view [url=http://www.gog.com/en/search/sort/search/strategy]strategy with some elements. The plot is similar to that of the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/jagged_alliance_2]original, yours being the second team sent to liberate Arulco. The gameplay became a lot more realistic and the difficulty went up, with the enemies wearing body armor and carrying rifles or shotguns right from the start, not to mention having an overall improved AI. A definite must-have for any Jagged Alliance series fan, not just the die-hard, hardcore ones.
This actually looks interesting. I just remember playing Jagged Alliance many many years ago and I was completely hooked.
And fan based stuff usually means good things :)
So this is like a standalone expansion?

michaelleung: So this is like a standalone expansion?

No,this is modded JA2 with tons of new features and bug fixes. :)
But... is it better, or is it just more difficult?
Is it really worth to buy the same game twice? (not criticizing, just asking...)

And with one maybe not so good feature: You can get almost any weapon relativelly very soon... And you can encounter some forgotten dialogues from JA2...
However this edition of JA2 focuses on action... So if you don't want to bother with some strategical elements from JA2 and want to experience a lot of action, take Wildfire, othervise take JA2...
Heh, I've been thinking of getting one of the Jagged Alliance games, but with all these incarnations, it's hard to decided where to start. I suppose the obvious would be the first one, in terms of continuity (if any), but as far as I see it that only matters if there are major relations between the MQ of the first and the rest of the games.

No, it really is just for them.
I think that GOG now have all the Jageed alliance games that exist !!! Nice job guys !!!
Is this charging for a fan mod or is the description saying something else?
Wildfire started out as a fan mod, but was eventually released commercially.
JA:wildfire doesn't have it's price listed in the new releases section of the games catalogue, i have seen it happen with other games too. I hope gog will fix it.

JA is nice if you're new to the series.
It's a great game.
If it doesn't get you hooked on the series, JA2 and it's many mods will.
Wildfire is a good mod, I had a lot of fun playing it.

NB: I have not played Wildfire, so these comments are speculation.
I understand that the boxed JA2: Wildfire also shipped with vanilla JA2, to give new players a starting point before they graduated to Wildfire. I'm leaning towards "just more difficult" - if it was all-around better then that wouldn't be necessary.
The games seem similar enough that it's difficult to describe Wildfire as "better" unless you're already a seasoned player.
