You're trying to play it like other games when it's not meant to be played that way. The pacing is deliberately smooth and constant, and that's achieved by the way you don't have to pause for a load every time you fall too far. You could do the same thing anyway with a quicksave button in any game, but that's irrelevant.
It's obviously not meant to be challenging, which means they weren't using challenge as a reward. That means you're not looking for the same things the designers meant to give you, so you're not getting the most out of the game. Maybe you aren't motivated to meet the game on its own terms, but that doesn't make it a bad game, it just means that it's not compatible with your tastes.
