Aliasalpha: yeah but duke 3d was what, 1996? That was basically perfect for the time since you could remember all those shitty action movies you watched as a kid and have a bit of a laugh about so over the top a character actually being presented seriously in those films. Obviously its just a personal thing but since the departure of the early arnie style movie hero, a character like that seems more like a twat rather than a fun jibe

Valrog: I bet you a GOG that if DNF is released (even if it's a completely new game with a different development team but with the same character and label), it would sell upwards of a million copies. People like playing the macho action hero.
Some people would, understandably, be offended by some content in the game. Everybody else would buy it.

Don't confuse "popular" with "good". For example, Transformers 2 was a popular movie that made a ton of cash, but I don't think anyone would really call it "good". I would say at least half (if not much more) of the most popular games out there are absolute crap. The Duke games do fall slightly on the side of crap. They can be a fun nostalgic diversion for a while, kind of like catching an old favorite action movie on TV on a Saturday afternoon, but they really aren't much more than that.
Duke3d's most attractive point was its amazing and detailed level design. People up to that point were used to seeing space bases in mars and big boxes that were supposed to resemble a city with names like e1m1. Duke3d showed everyone real life places like streets, strip joints, xxx stores, sushi restaurants, and so forth, with recognizeable names like Hollywood Holocaust and Red Light District. That's about the only thing that's got going for it. That and it's cool multiplayer perks like trip mines, holodukes and such.

kais246: Allways bet on Duke.
Anyone who disagrees with that statement please go jump off a building.
That is all.

Since 1999, the bets been placed, Im still hopeful!
Still the best trailer ever.

For me, at least, a lot of the attraction of the Duke Nukem games is that they don't take themselves seriously. The tongue-in-cheek humor and the clear impression that "it's all in good fun" that runs through the games makes them immensely enjoyable, I think.

Nah, nothing beats the 2001 trailer.

that. is. awesome.
absolutely no game footage FTW.
It's so great because it makes Duke's bad-assness shine through all the more and it's all that matters.
Wow. I was under the impression that more people around here would've loved that game as much as I did, considering all the praise for Serious Sam in the other thread. Serious Sam is a pale imitation in comparison to the humor and style in Duke Nukem.

The over the top machismo and overt sexism is exactly what makes Duke Nukem so fun. The closest thing we have today is Gears of War. And we all know how stupid that game is when it tries to do machismo and expect us to take it seriously.

Untrue. Serious Sam is a pretty damn good game where you just shoot shit and things happen along with Duke. I love Duke Nukem 3D. I love it with all the mods, the HRP, or just playing it in its true 90s graphics. What I don't like is how come it takes this long to make a goddamn game already.
But then if they release it and there are cover fire mechanics and you can do weird stuff like that then I will get very angry.

Thats the way!
I placed my bets, and have been raising them. When will the river card be dealt?

Never... the game has been going on so long that the dealer died of old age before he could get to it.
Yeah, unfortunately the next Duke game (whichever that may be) will take some time to come out.
But, if you've missed it and consider yourself a FPS fan you should definitely get the Atomic edition from here for just $6. It's undoubtedly one of the best games ever made.
