This thread remains me that I've have to finish my NWN (I have the Deluxe Edition).

MrWilli: Plus how the do you open a .rar file because I'm trying to play a mod but I can't open a dang .rar file.

There are many apps that can open RAR files. A quick Google search will return enough information for you. That said, though, here are three apps you can try.
WinRAR
WinZip
7-Zip
WinRAR and WinZip are shareware so you can try out an evaluation of them. I don't know whether 7-Zip is shareware or freeware.

Shure: You should definitely check Icewind Dale out if you've enjoyed Never Winter Nights, the graphics are dated by comparison but in their defence they are a very artistic and pleasant 2D visuals even by today's standards, the dialogue is nowhere near as hefty as NWN but this is due to Icewind Dale being a hack and slash dungeon epic as opposed to a free world exploration RPG.
It's different but in the best way possible, it's also polished to perfection and features and expansion set that adds a lot to the game and ramps up the difficulty if you're looking for an extra challenge :)
Really, a game worthy of addition to anyone's collection.
(The sequel isn't as good I feel, has the stranger, more up to date D&D ruleset which I'm not too fond of but it's a good game all the same)

I second that. Icewind Dale is a great game, with very tactical combats. Plus you have total control over your party, unlike NWN. The graphics aged pretty well, especially the backgrounds. I suggest playing with the extension (Heart of Winter) installed, since it upgrades the engine to play in greater resolutions. And if that is not enough, there is a community patch to play under any resolution, even widescreen. Definitely a game to check out if you're into D&D hack and slash. If you prefer pure role playing though, the Baldur's Gate series is probably better.
I've had this game for ages but after reading this thread I decided to finally give it a go. Installed NWN and SoU, installed the latest 1.69 patch opened the launcher, set the config clicked play and ... nothing. NWN logo pops up then disappears again. Tried going in and changing all the .exe's to XP SP2 and Admin still no go. Is there anything I am missing like SecuROM or something thats cocking with it?

I had this, but manually installing the latest hotfix (i think it was 1.69 too) fixed that for me. Strangely the launcher's updater was unable to do this, which is why I did it manually. Try disabling the sound in the launcher or config files and see if it helps. I had some sound problems too, solved it by removing a couple of the dlls (you should be able to google which ones) from the game directory.

Nothing I tried worked so I uninstalled it, cleaned the registry and re-installed it. It works fine before applying the patch and now I have applied the patch its back to CTD. *sigh*
Have you tried loading the game by bypassing the loader? There was a period of time where the launcher wouldn't work for me either (after 1.69), but it would load fine if I ran nwmain (or maybe it was nwn.exe, but I think it was nwmain).

Yeah tried everything. The basic version once SoU was installed (1.30) worked fine. For some reason installing 1.69 breaks it.
Are you sure you're installing the right patch? There are a million different NWN editions (well, at least 4), so maybe the Diamond patch won't work for Platinum, or whatever?

I remember there was a patch I had to physically find and download out side of the normal software updater. It choked somewhere along the way if I remember correctly and once I saw it and updated manually then the updater took it the rest of the way just fine. Diamond - Vista 64
Delixe: did you get the Critical Rebuild? If you've only got NWN and SoU (I get the impression from your posts that you don't have HotU), then you'll need to go Here. Scroll down to the bottom of Step 2 to grab the Critical Rebuild.
If you do have HotU installed, then go Here. Again, check step 2 for the link.
Hopefully that will get you running.

TheMadSpin: It's weird to see this topic come up this week because I'm currently working my way through the module creator.
Though I'm sure it's out of date, I decided to get the "Official World Builder Guide."
I need to find a good "C for Dummies" book or something. I used to be good with computers but then I got a social science degree and moved on to literature.
Now, I can't make sense of any of this coding stuff. Any advice?

Coelocanth: Try checking out the NWN Lexicon. The Lyceum tab has links to a basic scripting primer and tutorials.
MrWilli: check out Tony K's Henchman Inventory and Battle AI Mod for improved AI (both for your companions and for the mobs).
While you're there, grab the CEP (many modules require it). Some recommendations for modules to check out:
Bonds of Blood
The Aeilund Saga
Tragedy in Tragidor
Torslunda
Darkness Over Daggerford
Honor Among Thieves
Against the Cult of the Reptile God (great old PnP conversion done by Rich Barker)

Thanks for the link and the recommendactions. I might like some of them. Anyways I'm nearing the end of he Seige of Shadowdale module and must say besides a coupl complaints I have I really like so thanks Gundato for sending me to this series.
I love the fact that with the latest patch the DVD is no longer required to play, that's a plus. Wish they would do the same for the infinity engine games.
What happened to the "infinite dungeons" premium module, i just went to the page and got an 404. Is it no longer for sale? That thing was awesome.
Also, seconding the guy that said the the best way to play NWN is multiplayer.
Anyone know if it is possable to get the controls in NWN2 to mimic those of NWN? I really was turned off by the controls in NWN2 and never finished playing.
Lou, not sure. There may be a hak/override to change some things, but can you be more specific about which controls you want to change?
Menelkir: unfortunately, the Premium Modules are no longer available for download. They stopped sales of them some time ago, but you could still DL them if you'd bought them. Recently though, they changed the BioWare store, and you can no longer access them even if you bought them. It's apparently due to Atari and their ongoing issues. Pretty much screwed anyone that bought them and didn't back them up.
