PS: Oh, and a few recipe hints: you can also disinfect wounds with tannin/bark tea applied topically. Drinking the tea boosts your immune system too. And you can boil water to sterilize rags. Just in case you're getting stuck without antibiotics.

So I finally gave the demo a proper go. I'm a hunter kind of guy -- good at trapping, hiding, ranged combat, tracking and I have an eagle eye. Unfortunately I am also an insomniac.

Upon waking up and hiding from the dogman, I explore the place and find a multitool. Yay! I then leave the place and explore it for a bit, find some string and twine scraps, and decide to re-explore the cryo chamber. Nothing much I can do there though.

Returning to the great big outdoors, for days I just keep walking and eating whatever berries I find. Chomp chomp. Hiding, sleeping, trying to stay alive. Nothing much happens, but my guy is just a bare bones sort of character since I haven't visited cities. And then, I spot my first raider.

I dive into cover, but the guy sees me anyway and approaches. Then I come across the most epic melee combat ever. Despite being overwhelmed in size by the adversary, my guy is like Rocky the freaking Italian Stallion. At first, things go well. I charge the guy and bowl him over. The raider is a clumsy oaf, and keeps failing to get up, but the man is tenacious as hell. Every attempt I make at trying to stab him gets resisted with a hard bashing against the leg or chest with his rifle butt. No matter what I do, I just can't seem to get at the raider.

One blow knocks me off my feet. The raider gets up, and starts beating the crap out of me, whacking me in every possible location. One critical strike to the chest, and I begin to cough out blood. No matter how I try to dodge and roll, the guy just comes after me relentlessly, swinging his club over and over again until eventually my organs rupture and I die from internal bleeding.

Epic.

I can't wait to see what happens on my next adventure. So far everything looks really good.

Yeah, I'd love to be on both GOG and Gamersgate. I'll need to get the game closer to finished before launching on some services, though. Most don't offer games that are still in beta.

And thanks for your story! I'm surprised at how combat seems to play out most of the time. It feels better than I hoped, with gritty, desperate fights and limping, wounded victors.

Just wanted to pop by and let you know that v0.980 is live. It includes a new area called The Great Black Swamp, cannibalism penalties, new items, and quick recipe improvements. Beta users also get a few new encounters, encounter updates, and new ways of getting electricity.

I'll have to replay the demo actually - really enjoyed it before tha last laptop burned out and didnt get to play much at that. is it available anywhere WITHOUT the need for paypal? (ie direct card purchase?)

Hopefully, it's improved over the intervening time! Regarding payment types, the bluebottlegames.com site allows for credit card or Paypal, but nothing else yet. I believe Desura also uses the same payment types.

However, NEO Scavenger is also available via IndieGameStand, which additionally supports Amazon and Google payments. I believe Google supports bank/debit payments in certain countries (e.g. US, UK, Germany, etc.), and Amazon may as well. Buying a copy at IndieGameStand should grant you a Desura key, which in-turn grants you a bluebottlegames.com unlock.

Let me preface my answer by saying this: my estimations are unreliable. I've been wrong about launch date and scope every single time I've tried to estimate :)

That said, the game is almost done. The mechanics are pretty much stable and where I'd like them to be. The story is incomplete, with at least four more major encounters I have planned in the critical path (i.e. plot encounters). And I'd like to do another batch of content, such as items, clothes, creatures, headlines, and recipes.

Apart from the above, there's bug fixing, of course. Mechanics might be "massaged" here and there, for balance and fun factor. The UI may get some streamlining, too, as there are still some rough spots.

Post launch, I'm willing to look at making it moddable, but I don't want to promise anything. Since it's built on Flash, getting the game to load external content is a bit tricky (i.e. Flash security sandbox). However, I recognize what a big win that'd be for players, and if it's doable without major headaches, I will.
