Yet a large portion of the females I know play games. Not all of them play games on a daily or weekly basis, but most actually play games from time to time. If you were to include smartphone games (and I don't really see why not, many of the "simpler" smartphone games reminds me of the old arcade games in terms of complexity & approachability, and there are also plenty of more complex smartphone games), almost all of the females I know play games. Numbers are quite similar for the males that I know.

Well it all depends on the tastes of the female games in the future. If their tastes become close to mine, then my fear is not illogical. Then there will be more profit in making the type of games I like, cater to both genders(which means it not really catering to anyone) instead of catering to males. It's impossible to please everyone to a point with one game where everyone will love it. That is fact. One of the games I love, Vampire - Bloodlines, obviously caters to males. If back then, 50% of PC RPG gamers were females, there is a good chance, a lot of things would of been changed in this game or cut out(to make it more female friendly). Then it wouldn't be as good in my eyes. Equality doesn't work when it comes to entertainment, sorry.

I'm pretty sure that as long as society keeps promoting and forcing the image of females as socialite butterflies, and actively denigrating anyone who is introverted and thoughtful, that female gamers will keep playing casual and social games and not desktop PC games.

Nothing suprising about the statistic, but I wonder what the breakdown of what they are playing would be?

If we take out the social stuff like WoW, Farmville, Sims and Wii Fit, how many are there left and what are more are they playing.

Keep the feminist propaganda to yourself, please. It is extremely annoying. Society is promoting what most women want to be. There is a reason, you won't turn on 99% of women, by revealing to them, you are a gamer... Most women, do not find it attractive to be a gamer and most women do not find that lifestyle(sitting in front a computer for hours being anti social) appealing due to their nature. They'd much rather play a Facebook game while chatting with friends, or pay a game on their IPhone while riding a bus, on their way to some party. But this can always change due to a bunch of things I don't want to talk about.

It's good to hear that. I'm pleased to see more gamers(regardless of sex) interested in RPGs and Witcher is one of my favorites.

In RL where I live, there are no women (that I know of )interested in games. There's one I know that plays solitaire and another that used to play farmville but those don't count in my book.

It just whenever I hear, society is doing this or that to women, I'm going to assume the person saying this is a crazy feminist who sees evil everywhere. Today, society is on their side. Do you blame me, considering the kind of threads that have been popping up here lately?

No, I just think that society is discriminative of people who are introverted, don't like socializing, and like spending their own time by themselves, with computer activities, reading etc. I was just pointing out that it's far easier to be like that as a guy, because there's an all-encompassing social image nowadays that females have to be loud-talking socialites with a bazillion friends on Facebook, for guys the discrimination for being introspective is still there, but less so than females.

And I completely agree with StingingVelvet, these percentages are completely worthless to publishers if it doesn't divide the facebook "gamers" from the people who actually buy their newest releases.

This has been my experience also. I've come across many female gamers and you can't make any generalizations there. They all like different things. Surprise surprise, women are individuals too.

I've been a gamer for 30 years and it never stops to amuse me when someone half my age tries to suggest I'm ruining "his" hobby by "intruding". Goddamn brats, I was playing Ultima Underworld when they were in diapers. How about these entitled kids get out ruining my hobby, and off my lawn, eh? :-P

I was in the minority when I was a kid/teen, but right now there's growing up a new generation which sees gaming as something for everybody. My 12-year-old niece plays a lot on her DS and Wii (a big Super Mario fan there) and from what she says about her friends, girls her age take playing games for granted. I don't think it's ever even occurred to her to think of it as a "boy thing".

Guys, I think you should be very afraid. It is a known fact that playing video games lowers one's interest to sex, at least in a relationship. Soon women don't want to have sex either?

If no one makes an initiative anymore, people will not reproduce, and in the future there will be less and less gamers. Which means the video game business will collapse once again.

I agree that society looks down on(sometimes attacks)all introverted people who don't like socializing and like spending their own time by themselves. And yeah, it is more accepted to be a loner guy than a loner woman. But that is because of the nature of women. I believe, that women have a stronger need to socialize with other people compared to men. If you put a man and a woman in prison cells that force them to be alone for 24 hours everyday. I bet, the female will go insane, first. So when a women is living like a hermit, it is only natural to think, she has no choice and then people will look down on her even more than they look down on male hermits. A long time ago, women had to survive by not being ignored...by being well known by everyone so that they can find good men to protect them, hunt for them, build house for them etc. Back then, women weren't able to survive by themselves because of men limiting their freedom and their lack of upper body strength. Back then, a man could rise up with the sword, the axe and the spear. A woman could only rise up by being social...
