Since this is multinational forum, I would like to start a discussion about national stereotypes.

Consistent with reality or not, lets talk about them.

For example sterotypes about Poles:

1. catholic
2. alcoholic
3. anti-Semite
4. never smile
5. hard worker

Me:

1. protestant
2. abstinent
3. philo-Semite
4. rarely smile
5. lazy bastard

Something else about Poles: Fucking great death and black metal scene.

Any statistician will tell you stereotypes are useful tools for making guesses and evaluating trends. The problem is a lot of people use them to instantly assume someone's personality.

I have had to fight the ignorant American stereotype dozens of times.

Unrelentingly Patriotic....Check
Religion: Rugby.... Check
Incredible singing ability ... Unfortunately not check :( but I can bash out a good tune on a few instruments!

Oh, and before anyone mentions the typical one:

Unhealthy interests in Wooly ovine beasts … No :P

That would definitely be the national stereotype, that's not the stereotype over here ;)

Australians

1) Alcoholic
2) Sports Obssessed
3) Fit
4) Easy Going
5) Not entirely bright

1) Teatotaler
2) Hate sport because it used to interrupt scifi on TV

I loved that show and he's one of my favorite current comedians. The last show with the bit about videogames was hilarious as well.
Of course he's Irish, the only Australian comedian I know is Tim Minchin.

My gf introduced me to Tim Minchin's work and I have to say - he's awesome.

As to Dara O'Briain - I can watch him for hours over and over again...

Hm stereotypes...

There are things people think about my country but I don't know what people think of my people.

Aussie here. So anyway:

Stereotypes:

1) Religiously follows the NRL (at least in NSW and Qld).
2) Christian
3) Xenophobic
4) Loves beer
5) Calls everyone "mate"

Me:

1) I don't give a rat's anus about sport, NRL included.
2) Strongly anti-theist
3) I'm not exactly a fan of people in general, but as long as the immigrants are well educated and go through the proper immigration channels, I'm happy to share a country with them (yay politics!).
4) While I do like Guinness, I find most beer tends to taste about as good as (I imagine) giving a dog a rimjob.
5) I do this occasionally, but only ironically[/hipster]

The Dane

Stereotype

1: Loves meat balls and other fat food with brown sauce and potatoes.
2: Loves everything from H.C. Andersen
3: Drinks a whole lot of beer.
4: Well educated
5: Not very religious

Me:
1: Oh yes- indeed I like this food.
2: He's ok. I would actually like to know his fairy tales better.
3: I seldom drink beer, but it tastes ok.
4: I am studying russian, so is guess I fit in.
5: Very religious.
