Good sir, I really like you.
What do you think of the latest Deathspell Omega releases? The split and the EP?
Prog metal for the win!
Ulytau - Neo-Classical Progressive Folk Metal from Kazakhstan... o_O Most of their songs are based on classical pieces, no vocals, pretty hot violinist, pretty cool... =)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGK1gwCa1yk
UnexpecT - Avant-garde Metal, it will quite literally blow your mind, the mix of musical styles and vocals is pretty fscked... ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbSUEbG3OVE
Tool - No band like it, their music is pretty much art, never mind the album artwork, and Maynard's awesome voice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhjG47gtMCo
Dream Theater - Amazing skill for all the band members', and great music, can't really pick a good song to represent them... XD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAHfDrak52E
Opeth - Mix of melodic death with calmer stuff, very melodic and great riffs, and nice vocals for both growl and clean, if you don't like death growls, start off with Damnation album, then move on to Blackwater Park or Deliverance, great stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvLn8j4c5l4
Protest The Hero - This is more Progressive Technical Core, with kinda emo-like vocals, but their Kezia album is absolutely epic and should be listened to from beginning to end. A very interesting mix of vocals and riffs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAutUObokCM
A.U.Y. - Prog Rock. Not a well-known band by any means, but I love their songs.
http://auy.art.pl/audio/A.U.Y.%20-%20Machine.mp3
http://auy.art.pl/audio/A.U.Y.%20-%20Madness.mp3
In terms of non-progressive stuff that's relatively unique and awesome to listen to:
Apocalyptica - Cello Metal... Started off doing Cello Metallica covers, now moved on to awesomer stuff, this video is pure win. ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGnAzkh9kn0
My Dying Bride - Doom/Death Metal, got me gradually used to death vocals with its mix, beautiful riffs, occasional piano, violin, haunting vocals, amazingly depressing...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED_FI6SgqVc
Nightwish - Opera Metal? =P Fun to listen to, Tarja's voice is awesome =D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UztEfwHt14
System of a Down - Hard Rock, pretty heavy mixed with melodic parts, very political lyrics, but REALLY fun vocals and music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg
I'm too lazy to find any more stuff, but random bands of note off the top of my head:
Meshuggah - Progressive Metal, kinda repetitive, but awesome 'cause the time signatures are crazy, the drummer is just... wow... ;)
Stabbing Westward - Industrial-ish rock, kinda depressing, nice riffs
Billy Talent - all-songs-by-this-band-sound-the-same Rock, but nice guilty pleasure when you're depressed =P
The vast majority of gamers/nerds I know have a preference for metal and/or classical music. But there's a fair amount listening to techno and other listenable-to stuff as well, with some minority actually enjoying hip-hop... =P

An entire new genre is growing because of that band : the djent! Mainly lead by (Light just fucking pwns) and TesseracT, they aim to deliver complex riffing and groove... Just plain awesome.
A french friend has a band that plays ambiant / djent and it's really amazing. They're recording their album and from the demo I've heard it's just mindblowing! Uneven Structure it is!
Finally if you like that so much you can check out , Xerath (orchestral in the dimmu borgir way djent) and Animals As Leaders, instrumental only djent.
And if you like... you can drop by on a djent chat here ;)

I already have "Mass Grave Aesthetics" on the "From the Entrails to the Dirt" split from 2005. Killer track, one of their best. I like some bits on "Chaining the Katechon", but the S.V.E.S.T. part of the split is fucking supreme. Et la Lumière Fut, Comme un Coup de Scalpel !!
My primary music lately is Vocal Trance. I like it for its complexity and depth, probably similar to the reasons a lot of people like metal. I did go through a metal phase (for many years actually), but "outgrew" it. (Some parts of the Metal community border on self-parody, or conforming to non-conformity. This is from the perspective of someone who lived it for a long time.)
Some of my favorite vocal trance mixes are from DJ Kewlaid. www.djkewlaid.com . My favorite is probably Cherry, but they are all good.
I also like a bit of classic rock. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. That was my main genre as a teenager, but I eventually got tired of not having new things to listen to, and had to branch out into newer music. I don't want to become an old person who's been listening to the same music for my whole life.
That said, all music is a blessing. I will never criticize anyone for loving music, of any kind.

I guess I'll go ahead and throw in my 10 cents but I think a lot has already been covered so I'll try and branch out a bit.
Between the Buried and Me - don't think I saw mention of them anywhere for some reason prog-death metal kind of like an American version of Opeth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChNolV4QZd4 (Mordecai - an oldie but instantly memorable)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKQSe3TatPQ (Selkies - ohhhhhh...)
The Receiving End of Sirens - Kind of emo-esque (almost wana call 'em prog-emo) band that really has to be listened to repeatedly to "get" -one of my favorite non-metal bands
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhJ3UO2ItqI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbuoMP1VSJU
The Dead Weather - new band Jack White (of the White Stripes) is in -this vid just rules
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7QSkI6My1g
Arsonists Get All the Girls - Violence in Fluid: Triceratops
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd8l5zjWJ7Q
Don't really like the band that much but this particular song... mmmm... just groovy
Dillinger Escape Plan - incredibly odd band, all over the place, considered to be the inventors of "mathcore" - the video pretty much sums up the energy and violence of the band (sound of the vid sucks though)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-lxwlgyhhA
William Shatner - need I say more?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKbt3wRsZYw
(and yes the cd is good if you haven't heard)
Explosions in the Sky - post-rock, instrumental only band kooky good with trance inducing swells in the music and just all-around good instrumentation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzIK5FaC38w
Burning the Masses - Galactic Abduction (most epic ending EVER)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBqHykwabpU
Well, I guess I didn't branch out THAT much, what can I say I have a soft spot for metal too...
Gotta go with:
Amon Amarth - "Tattered Banners and Bloody Flags" and "The Hero."
Behemoth - "At the Left Hand ov God" and "As Above So Below."
Lamb of God - "Omerta" and "In Defense of Our Good Name."
Opeth - "The Leper Affinity" and "Blackwater Park."
Modest Mouse - "We've Got Everything" and "Dashboard."
And the soundtracks to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Code Geass.

I've seen and met Dillinger. They are quite good. But they didn't invent Mathcore. There were at least a dozen Mathcore bands before them. The earliest I know of is Candiria, which predated them by almost a decade.
The Beatles - Eight Days a Week Come Together Something
Tool - Swamp Song
King Crimson - Cirkus
Tori Amos - Another Girl's Paradise Spark
Massive Attack - Inertia Creeps Butterfly Caught
and many many more like Kyuss, Faith No More, Megadeth, The Melvins, Slayer, Testament, Korn...
Wow, lots of metalheads here!
For me it's all about Prog/Power metal.
Symphony X
Hammerfall
Heavenly
Iced Earth
Amon Amarth (Favorite Melodic DM band)
You get the point....

Well I stand corrected. I was under the impression that they at least somewhat "popularized" it, but I guess I didn't research the genre enough, oh well can't win 'em all, eh? I'll definitely check out Candiria then because I certainly do like Dillinger. BTW what were they like I haven't had the opportunity to see them live or meet them, are the pretty cool?

Just found a great new band the other week by watching this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B084zv59WwA
Within temptation is the band. I found 4 cds in flac over at tpb.
As far as general stuff, I'm pretty eclectic: rock, trance, old school electronic house, rock, certain kinds of alternative (cake FTW), classical, rock, some reggae, ska, and ... uh ... rock.
I've given up on trying to label things into genres, all genres have great stuff and total crap.
If anyone doesn't know about pandora, you need to go there.
I'll just name off some, IMO, not well known bands, that people may want to check out:
Kill Hannah
Porcupine Tree
VAST
Breaking Benjamin (album _we are not alone_ is great to play ut2004 with)
Less than Jake
Delerium
Minus the Bear
Klayton Scott (aka Circle of Dust, aka Celldweller (this cd has a few quite rockin tunes))
Also, there's this really cool new band called rage against the machine that you may not have heard of.
