Opeth - Mix of melodic death with calmer stuff, very melodic and great riffs, and nice vocals for both growl and clean, if you don't like death growls, start off with Damnation album, then move on to Blackwater Park or Deliverance, great stuff.

Protest The Hero - This is more Progressive Technical Core, with kinda emo-like vocals, but their Kezia album is absolutely epic and should be listened to from beginning to end. A very interesting mix of vocals and riffs.

Meshuggah - Progressive Metal, kinda repetitive, but awesome 'cause the time signatures are crazy, the drummer is just... wow... ;)
Stabbing Westward - Industrial-ish rock, kinda depressing, nice riffs
Billy Talent - all-songs-by-this-band-sound-the-same Rock, but nice guilty pleasure when you're depressed =P
The vast majority of gamers/nerds I know have a preference for metal and/or classical music. But there's a fair amount listening to techno and other listenable-to stuff as well, with some minority actually enjoying hip-hop... =P

An entire new genre is growing because of that band : the djent! Mainly lead by (Light just fucking pwns) and [url=http://www.myspace.com/tesseract]TesseracT, they aim to deliver complex riffing and groove... Just plain awesome.
A french friend has a band that plays ambiant / djent and it's really amazing. They're recording their album and from the demo I've heard it's just mindblowing! Uneven Structure it is!

I already have "Mass Grave Aesthetics" on the "From the Entrails to the Dirt" split from 2005. Killer track, one of their best. I like some bits on "Chaining the Katechon", but the S.V.E.S.T. part of the split is fucking supreme. Et la Lumière Fut, Comme un Coup de Scalpel !!

My primary music lately is Vocal Trance. I like it for its complexity and depth, probably similar to the reasons a lot of people like metal. I did go through a metal phase (for many years actually), but "outgrew" it. (Some parts of the Metal community border on self-parody, or conforming to non-conformity. This is from the perspective of someone who lived it for a long time.)
Some of my favorite vocal trance mixes are from DJ Kewlaid. www.djkewlaid.com . My favorite is probably Cherry, but they are all good.
I also like a bit of classic rock. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. That was my main genre as a teenager, but I eventually got tired of not having new things to listen to, and had to branch out into newer music. I don't want to become an old person who's been listening to the same music for my whole life.
That said, all music is a blessing. I will never criticize anyone for loving music, of any kind.

I've seen and met Dillinger. They are quite good. But they didn't invent Mathcore. There were at least a dozen Mathcore bands before them. The earliest I know of is Candiria, which predated them by almost a decade.

Well I stand corrected. I was under the impression that they at least somewhat "popularized" it, but I guess I didn't research the genre enough, oh well can't win 'em all, eh? I'll definitely check out Candiria then because I certainly do like Dillinger. BTW what were they like I haven't had the opportunity to see them live or meet them, are the pretty cool?

As far as general stuff, I'm pretty eclectic: rock, trance, old school electronic house, rock, certain kinds of alternative (cake FTW), classical, rock, some reggae, ska, and ... uh ... rock.
I've given up on trying to label things into genres, all genres have great stuff and total crap.
