Prog metal for the win!
Ulytau - Neo-Classical Progressive Folk Metal from Kazakhstan... o_O Most of their songs are based on classical pieces, no vocals, pretty hot violinist, pretty cool... =)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGK1gwCa1yk UnexpecT - Avant-garde Metal, it will quite literally blow your mind, the mix of musical styles and vocals is pretty fscked... ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbSUEbG3OVE Tool - No band like it, their music is pretty much art, never mind the album artwork, and Maynard's awesome voice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhjG47gtMCo Dream Theater - Amazing skill for all the band members', and great music, can't really pick a good song to represent them... XD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAHfDrak52E Opeth - Mix of melodic death with calmer stuff, very melodic and great riffs, and nice vocals for both growl and clean, if you don't like death growls, start off with Damnation album, then move on to Blackwater Park or Deliverance, great stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvLn8j4c5l4 Protest The Hero - This is more Progressive Technical Core, with kinda emo-like vocals, but their Kezia album is absolutely epic and should be listened to from beginning to end. A very interesting mix of vocals and riffs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAutUObokCM A.U.Y. - Prog Rock. Not a well-known band by any means, but I love their songs.
http://auy.art.pl/audio/A.U.Y.%20-%20Machine.mp3 http://auy.art.pl/audio/A.U.Y.%20-%20Madness.mp3 In terms of non-progressive stuff that's relatively unique and awesome to listen to:
Apocalyptica - Cello Metal... Started off doing Cello Metallica covers, now moved on to awesomer stuff, this video is pure win. ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGnAzkh9kn0 My Dying Bride - Doom/Death Metal, got me gradually used to death vocals with its mix, beautiful riffs, occasional piano, violin, haunting vocals, amazingly depressing...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED_FI6SgqVc Nightwish - Opera Metal? =P Fun to listen to, Tarja's voice is awesome =D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UztEfwHt14 System of a Down - Hard Rock, pretty heavy mixed with melodic parts, very political lyrics, but REALLY fun vocals and music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdRd3k4CIAg I'm too lazy to find any more stuff, but random bands of note off the top of my head:
Meshuggah - Progressive Metal, kinda repetitive, but awesome 'cause the time signatures are crazy, the drummer is just... wow... ;)
Stabbing Westward - Industrial-ish rock, kinda depressing, nice riffs
Billy Talent - all-songs-by-this-band-sound-the-same Rock, but nice guilty pleasure when you're depressed =P
The vast majority of gamers/nerds I know have a preference for metal and/or classical music. But there's a fair amount listening to techno and other listenable-to stuff as well, with some minority actually enjoying hip-hop... =P
