What the hell's up with this album? I heard the first song from their music video, and being a fan of some of their other songs I've heard else where, I immediately hit the "Buy" button for the album. Unfortunately, I seem to have chosen their experimental album as my first of theirs. While there are some intense rock pieces (Uprising, Unnatural Selection, MK Ultra) there are also some soft ballads that seem to be reaching for what Queen did in numerous songs, but sort of missing the mark. The album seems to be going for a 1984-style future as their theme (they even mention that their second song on the album, Resistance, refers directly to two characters in the novel), and while that stays pretty consistent, the quality dips in a couple of places. When I get more money, I'll go for that album that had Knights of Cydonia and Take a Bow. That's probably more up my alley.
Also, after reading some of their explanations for the songs on this album, I now realize this was meant as an artistic expression. That's great and all, but it's not exactly something I can rock out to, as I've relied on the few Muse songs I knew in the past. Except for track 1. That track is awesome.

All their albums are pretty prog rock.
Absolution was the least prog and the most rock.... but the early ones were pretty out there in places, and Black Holes was more Prog Rock+Pop.
I must check out Resistance though, haven't picked it up yet.

It's not that I absolutely hate the album, it's just that I was expecting something completely different than what I got.
Ah, experimental music. The horrors that ensue afterwards.

Most artists seem to do that. They always want to do something different for their next album therefore sometimes you may get disapointed or end up getting used to it and enjoying it.
I enjoyed Muse's new album. It blends some of their older stuff (in terms of soundscapes and less pop nature) and the Black Holes & Revelations album. Funny enough my fav song on it is the R&B styled one (Undisclosed Desires) :P

I liked Muse, but went off them. Not when their fans started proclaiming them the greatest band ever. But rather when they started believing it.

Nine Inch Nails > The Beatles > Coldplay > U2 > Snow Patrol > David Byrne > Muse
That's how I see it.

I'd nudge U2 down a bit. The Beatles are also a tad overrated. But I suppose they do score points for their contributions to the better aspects of the music industry as it is today. Completely agreed on NIN. Although Trent did go through a bit of a crappy period. They're back now.

Crappy period also known as the "Professor Snape hairdo era". I personally liked U2 (yes, I did like their new album) mostly because I grew up listening to this stuff (as well as The Beatles).

Hey, you might be onto something there. Maybe his hairdo acted as a beacon for crappiness and Trent was overcome by the influx of banality?

Probably felt on top of the world when he thought people liked his music back then (OK, fine, The Fragile didn't suck that much).
So THAT'S where JK Rowling got her inspiration for the Snape character. It all makes sense now.

I actually like The Fragile. Maybe not quite as much as The Downward Spiral. But it's still a good album.
Does that mean that JK Rowling is a secret NIN fan? Or does that mean that she hates them? Hmm...

My favorite album by NIN is With Teeth. Mostly because Only is the greatest NIN song ever and I will fight anyone who dares to question me. The Slip was pretty good, and not just because it was free. Year Zero is good too, but the ARG freaked me out.
Ghosts was an experimental/instrumental album, but it wasn't shit at least.
Anyway, back to Muse. Honestly, I don't think I'll get this album. Hell, I don't think I'll even torrent it.

Ditto. After seeing concert tickets for £250, I think that any residual interest I had in them died.

I recommend giving it a while. I didn't really like their first 2 albums as they were a bit too prog for me... but i loved absolution.. and then i got into the first 2.

I know what you mean about muse fans... though i may have been one of them. But at the time i was saying they were the best band... pretty much everything else did suck. ;-)
Snow Patrol?????? Seriously???
I loved the first half of Final Straw (the 2nd half went a bit downhill). And was expecting big things of them. But then their next album seemed aimed at ballad loving housewives and i totally lost interest.
I never investigated their newer (or older) stuff as that album was such a huge letdown. It was like they were trying to be coldplay, but failing badly.
