I'm one of the few that liked Max Payne in the theater. I did have problems hearing and adjusting to Mona Sax as the little girl on Family Guy, but she did a decent acting job. I would have preferred more game tie in (especially in delivery style), but overall really enjoyed it and would like to see a sequel. Other Game to Movie adaptations that brought a decent story are Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, and maybe Resident Evil.

But those are all action games with a decent subplot. Then we get these other games that were adapted to film:

Doom... if it moves, shoot it. Oh, you are in space.
Mortal Kombat... the entire plot of this game came from about 7 lines of text if I'm not mistaken.
Far Cry... same as doom, but a climate change.
Dungeon Siege... you don't get to loot in the theater :(
Pokemon... can't even comment on this one.

Some action games fared OK, some FPS and strategy games were predictably abysmal... where are the adventure games? The games that actually have REAL story to tell in a way that movie goers would soak up?

Where is:

Sanitarium
The Longest Journey (but not longer than 3 hours)
Gabriel Knight
Still Life
Myst/Riven/etc.
Syberia
Any adventure game (or am I missing some?)

With the desperation of establishing new "blockbuster" IP and the continuation of "Safe" franchises, why are the most storied and easily converted options the ones still covered in dust? I get giddy thinking of what a competent director could do with the Myst franchise on the big screen. There is so much to show and tell.

Thoughts? rebuttals? opinions? movie directors that will run off and make these?
You know, every time someone mentions the name Uwe Boll....

<choking sound>
A lot of people think the first Mortal Kombat movie was pretty good. I am one of those.

I've tried to watch Alone in the Dark about a dozen times. I think 10 minutes was the longest I was able to last. This is one I wanted to put in the "why hasn't it been made" section... but, sadly, it has.

There was nothing wrong with the Mortal Kombat movie. It's one of the few movies made from a video game that actually followed the plot of the game. Compare that to others like Super Mario Brothers, Street Fighter and *shudder* Dead or Alive.
I actually enjoyed Super Mario Bros ^_^' it was quite a weird and original take. Lets face it, it would have been considerably worse if it had been a live action film of a dude jumping around a techni-colour dreamland in various costumes, including some that would drive Furries wild, whilst popping mushrooms. (Though that instantly brings to mind the mushroom scene in Tenacious D- The Pick of Destiny which was fairly cool.)
I enjoyed Mario Bros., but I can't tell you why. Maybe because I was only 11.

Avarage gamer response:

Sanitarium - "Never heard of it"
The Longest Journey (but not longer than 3 hours) - "Never heard of it"
Gabriel Knight - "Never heard of it"
Still Life - "Never heard of it"
Myst/Riven/etc. - "I heard of that. that's really old right? Old games suxxorz"
Syberia - "Never heard of it"

Average movie business guy response to average gamer response:
"If the average gamer doesn't care, then neither do we."
I think you should have called the thread "Game Movies". I came here thinking I'd find a discussion about games based on movies, not the other way around.

That aside, I actually enjoyed the Hitman movie tremendously. There are a few odd plot holes here and there, but all in all I think it's good entertainment. I'm probably in the minority there though.

Oh, and Uwe Boll needs to be trampled to death... By ducks.

Thank gosh there's another soul who likes Hitman. I actually like that movie quite a lot :)

Yeah, I watch it a couple of times a year. It annoys me a bit that they changed his background completely, but it's a great action flick, and I think Timothy Olyphant did a fantastic job of portraying him.

I agree. And the movie is great fun, everyone should give it a go :)

And it stars that russian chick too, Olga stmh ;-)

Edit. A sequel is in the making, YAY!

They're making a Myst movie, or at least trying to. Spielburg was interested I remember.

I don't care if people don't care. As long as they don't market it as a movie of an old game, and just market it about the plot...http://mystmovie.com/2011/05/28/and-you-thought-id-wait-till-after-june-1st/

And The Longest Journey would be nothing new for us, unless they do another storyin the same universe.

Uwe Boll managed to put movies based on computer/video game back a 100 years single handed.

That's how I think of it as well.

Hand-cranked, blurry, black and white films with no sound? :P
