I'm one of the few that liked Max Payne in the theater. I did have problems hearing and adjusting to Mona Sax as the little girl on Family Guy, but she did a decent acting job. I would have preferred more game tie in (especially in delivery style), but overall really enjoyed it and would like to see a sequel. Other Game to Movie adaptations that brought a decent story are Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, and maybe Resident Evil.
But those are all action games with a decent subplot. Then we get these other games that were adapted to film:
Doom... if it moves, shoot it. Oh, you are in space.
Mortal Kombat... the entire plot of this game came from about 7 lines of text if I'm not mistaken.
Far Cry... same as doom, but a climate change.
Dungeon Siege... you don't get to loot in the theater :(
Pokemon... can't even comment on this one.
Some action games fared OK, some FPS and strategy games were predictably abysmal... where are the adventure games? The games that actually have REAL story to tell in a way that movie goers would soak up?
Where is:
Sanitarium
The Longest Journey (but not longer than 3 hours)
Gabriel Knight
Still Life
Myst/Riven/etc.
Syberia
Any adventure game (or am I missing some?)
With the desperation of establishing new "blockbuster" IP and the continuation of "Safe" franchises, why are the most storied and easily converted options the ones still covered in dust? I get giddy thinking of what a competent director could do with the Myst franchise on the big screen. There is so much to show and tell.
Thoughts? rebuttals? opinions? movie directors that will run off and make these?
