Underrated games, they are overrated by being underrated.

"ICO is so awesome, because it is so underrated."

(Note I liked Ico)
First thing that comes to mind is more or less everything by Blizzard that I played, with the exception of The Lost Vikings, if it was actually made by this company.

The rest of what I had played from them is Blacthorne, Warcraft, Warcraft 2 with expansion, Starcraft with expansion and Diablo with expansion. My strongest impressions are that strategies all had abysmal AI and their RPG was simplified to the extreme.

Then I learned my lesson, turned the cloak against the hype and stopped buying their games.
So basically this thread is "I dont like this game so neither should you!"

I think there are a few games that are "objectively" (if that is even possible) overrated. Like my examples ;-P.

BLASPHEMY!!!! haha
Got to go with Call of Duty especially as the series progressed same game different setting bt game mechanics pretty static.
Ill defend Call of Duty here. As a lover of old war games the series does the WW2 thing very very well. Even Modern Warfare was excellent. However generally anything after that can drown in a pile of dead babies.

I love Half Life 2 but I agree it is objectively overrated as the second-coming of Christ. The expansions were shit, also.

I hate Blizzard games usually but I cannot say they are objectively overrated because they do things with mechanics and addictive feedback that are amazing and exceedingly effective. They earn their massive sales, or at least did before Diablo 3. Whether that fucks them up is anyone's guess.

Modern CoD games are borderline... I think they are overrated but if you want that polished cinematic singleplayer or that level-up small team deathmatch it's pretty much the perfect representation of it, isn't it?

It's important to look outside our own tastes when speaking of what is over or underrated.

I enjoyed H-L 2... A bit. Travelling from point A to B was boring and annoying to me. When you finally got to point B, there was some kickass shooting, great physics etc. but then you travelled again.

And I'm not really a fan of mute heroes with no personality.

H-L2 is a fine shooter, but nowhere near my personal list of all time the best gmes.

I only played maybe a third of Black Ops II. But this game is the best SP story shooter in a long time. It actually is somewhat underrated critically because MW 3 was so mediocre.

It might sound weird, but from the looks of it, Black Ops II might be a real hidden gem.

Well actually, they've earned it with Diablo 3 as well. Blizzard has always been in the business for streamlining and polishing their games, and Diablo 3 is a great example of that - it's simplified, it doesn't quire require so much thought, and it gives you loads of immediate rewards with a strong sense of progression. Perhaps undeserved, but it's there nevertheless. Basically Blizzard understands that casual is where money is, and D3 is a prime example of that. It does what it does extremely well, Blizzard has taken the slotmachine thing to the extreme (including paid content when you're not doing well!)
Half Life 1, probably heresy, but I just didn't "get" it.
