Bavarian: I never understood the excitement about Bayonetta. It's a good game, but not nearly as outstanding as I expected it to be, judging by how it is praised by fans and critics.
avatar
Elmofongo: Well mabye its because probably most of those critics and fans were Male sooooo yeah....
Gimme a second, gotta check something...

Yes, I'm male, too.

She is designed to be hot, and it's working. But I'm talking about the game Bayonetta, not the witch Bayonetta. The game is praised for its mechanics and style, and therefore overrated, if you ask me.
Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition
WoW

I'll quote this from every player:
- "Ah..dude, the game begins when you hit the level cap."

Red_Avatar: I find that console gamers tend to massively exaggerate how great a game is. Metal Gear Solid 2 was deemed THE best game on every gaming forum I went to the first year after released yet when I played it, I found it to be highly tedious due to the constant interruption of the gameplay not to mention the game itself wasn't THAT great.
Don't PC gamers do the same thing? Just look at massive hype over Half Life and anything from Blizzard.

Hmmmm, i'm a different kind of player. I don't play MMOs that much (right now i'm not playing any due to the lack of time), but when i do, leveling up, doing quests and getting new gear is what i enjoy the most. Once i reach level cap i kind of lose interest in the game. I don't enjoy PvP in MMOs, most of the time it's an unbalanced mess that rewards the players with the best equipment.

SimonG: I only played maybe a third of Black Ops II. But this game is the best SP story shooter in a long time. It actually is somewhat underrated critically because MW 3 was so mediocre.

It might sound weird, but from the looks of it, Black Ops II might be a real hidden gem.
I have just finished Black Ops 2 and i have to agree with you. It's the best story in a shooter i've seen this year. I didn't expect such a polished story from a COD game, especially after the mess that was Black Ops (that numbers BS sucked in my opinion).

People bash Black Ops 2 because it carries the COD name on it. If it were called differently people would praise it. But no, it's a COD game, let's judge it before even playing it like we do every year with every COD.

Call of Duty because there are more games than just that in death match style such as Team Fortress 2.

Halo
There are other first person shooters out there such as Doom Wolf3d, Duke Nukem 3d & Quake.

WOW There are other MMOs that are free to play and that are better than WOW.

Red_Avatar: Heck, I own a PS1, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, Gamecube & Wii yet haven't bought a console exclusive game in 3 years because none appeal to me. I think it's mostly a pissing match between console fanboys. "Gears of War is THE best game and it's Xbox exclusive, suck on that!" bla bla bla.
That's because the big ones mostly aren't very good. I, personally, tend to find games like Viva Pinata: Trouble In Paradise to be far more charming and all around more fun to play than something like Gears. I suspect many of the PS3 "usual suspects" are terribly overrated as well, yet I'm sure I'd love the hell out of Journey.
Interesting topic. Haven't read it all so I assume someone may have already touched on what I wanted to mention but I'm going to bring it up anyway.

Personally I tend to avoid pointing to a game and accusing it of being overrated simply because I may get my own opinions too involved where a fan of whatever game it may be could easily point out my mistakes. For example, I could list so many reasons why I hated Final Fantasy X to two of my friends and, whilst some of my perceived "reasons" are fair criticisms, they're not enough for me to call it an overrated title.

What I've found in this topic is that a lot of people simply do the same; they list the reasons why they hated the game they chose without making any strong comparisons to another title that's shadowed by its popularity or massive success, which I believe is very important to include. It's not wholly necessary in every case but you can emphasise your argument of why Title A is overrated when - look! - Title B does it far better yet received a lot of flak.

Speaking of emphasis, I find that many people make the mistake of strongly stating that a title is overrated in certain, specific respects without detailing why these are overrated features of the game. It's really annoying to read "The role playing mechanics of this game sucked" with no comparison or explanation.

Context is extremely important too. It's obviously only fair to compare a game to, say, others released within the same, close period of time - not ten years later or something as silly - but also, I feel, to titles with similar aspects / those that belong in the same genre. This obviously wouldn't be the case every time if you're just, for instance, explaining why Title A receives too much praise for its story and characters compared to Title B that was released the same week but didn't get the attention it deserved. Either way, context is certainly essential.

But I find this creates a problem when trying to call several more "unique" titles overrated as it may be the case that you find no game to readily compare it to. For example, Shadow of Colossus is a game I love and, although it surely does receive honest criticism which I can completely understand, I don't personally feel that it's an overrated title because I find that it's a difficult game to accuse of being so in the first place given simply the game that it is. You can't even compare it to Ico surprisingly because - apart from the similar approach to storytelling - they're completely different games.

Going to cut the rest of this short as I feel like I've gone on for too long but, given what I've said, I do want to point that I do feel there are certain times where a game or series of games can be argued as overrated, most particularly following the time approaching a game's release in which marketing is involved. It obviously serves to stir up hype but I also find that, through the hype, the game has already been given a pedestal on which to stand and trying to argue that it's overrated for what it was advertised as being upon its release is pretty difficult to get across to the people who bought into the hype.

But, honestly, perspective is too important for me to take yellings of "This game is overrated and here's why" all too seriously. Take the new Hitman title for instance. Been a huge fan of that series since Codename 47 and, whilst I can completely understand why - and relate to how - many fans were left disappointed in a number of ways, I also have a slightly different perspective on why the series is so great and thought that Absolution lived up to my "ideals", as it were.

As long as people can explain their arguments well then I can respectively disagree with them by countering their points with my own. You might change one another's mind, sure, but it's unlikely. People just enjoy different things about a whole host of games. Hell, they may even have a different experience in mind when looking at any game. e.g. Some people will say, "Oh, this game has the cheesiest and most awful writing" whereas someone else may find that same story fun and enjoyable for what it is.

So, yeah, with my long-winded rambling coming to an end I've lost what my point was. :P
Any Zelda.

The N64 ones I will agree hands down.

LttP though is still one of the greatest games ever :P

Actually, most PC forums I go to are pretty divided and at most go "I think this may be my GOTY". I agree HL2 was hyped massively but it was the sequel to a very important game so that's no surprise but it's very rare for PC gamers to do that in general I feel. They did it with Counter Strike too but that was deserved. About Blizzard games: they have always left people divided - Diablo III got a big slamming on most forums I go to so no, I don't think PC gamers do the same thing. WoW is loved mostly by casual gamers and most of my gaming friends really dislike WoW.

Like I said, I really think that with exclusive games, console gamers just love to believe they made the right choice of console so gloat about games, ignoring their flaws because that's how it always came across to me. These games then end up on PC and make me go "meh, are they serious?" LA Noire for example, or Halo 1 & 2. They're not bad games but have so many flaws that it makes me think "how can you really think this was ever one of the best games ever?"

Quoted for truth.

(Almost) every Zelda game does the following:

- give you a world to get lost in
- give that world a ton of areas you can't reach until you get some extra power or item
- make you backtrack constantly once you get a new item

It's basically a maze game where you have to go through the maze several times over each time you find an item and frankly, it's annoying.

Heck, yesterday I played Zelda: Link's Awakening and one puzzle meant you had to "win" a bag of powder (they don't drop anywhere else) so you could use it to break a spell and as a result, continue on your journey. Now, with an emulator this is easy, but without one, it would have taken you a lot of grinding for money before you managed to get the bag of powder and that's without even noting that no-one in the game said you had to use that bag of powder to break the spell.

Zelda games are filled with this stuff and I actually find the N64 version of Zelda to easily be the best myself because it doesn't sin quite as much. Wind Waker had other flaws (and Phantom Hourglass was very painful to play on my NDS).
"...overrated games" plural. So here is my list :

Portal (to this day i still have no idea why people love this game)
Wow (grind grind overrated got boring very fast)
GTA IV - loved Vice City and San Andreas. GTA IV was an exercise in boredom, slow, missions boring, lacked the excitement and variety of the earlier games.Plus the HUGE download size didnt do it any favours for me :/.
The titles I just thought about
Half Life 2 - people love Valve and Half life was epic this was "just" good game
Halo - I guess its the title responsible for shift to console FPS games but its just a cartoony shooter with multiplayer
GTAIV - Since when step backward and droping many mechanics of previous titles is a good thing?
Red Dead Redeption - I get that ending and late title card was cool but the story was not nearly as good as people make it.
Starcraft, Diablo2
