TheJoe: I sound like an idiot, but let's take Vagabond's true love, Crusader. The first game, specifically. Let's make it a first person shooter with hyper-realistic graphics. Lose all the RPG elements because those aren't important. Vagabond will sound like an idiot about that, too. Oh, and it has the Ubirape DRM on it, too. You must also buy it from Steam.

stonebro: This isn't a valid comparison to what happened with MI1:SE. There were no elements taken out of it. The gameplay style was not changed compared to the original. Some people got anus gremlins when they saw the remade Guybrush, which really made me laugh. The original Guybrush was a 25-pixel sprite, where the head and hair was done in about four colors and 10 pixels put together. You could imagine his face looked like just about anything within that detail level. So how the fuck can you claim that it just doesn't look like Guybrush?
Not that I entirely liked it either. But as far as trying to justify that opinion goes, it's just completely illogical.

Ok, that's fine. But I'm still not playing it.

You could also switch back and forth between the new look and the original.

And turn off the speech, Mike? What's the point of playing SE in that way, if we could just stick to the original, and have the same thing?
I'll wait for this one.
I'm hoping that Lucasarts will eventually re-release all four of the MI games. I want to play Tales of Monkey Island at some point, but I have this thing about playing items in a series out of order...
I never played the first Monkey Island before, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. I suppose it didn't look bad to me because I never played it before.
Also, I bet that when they say "we heard from sources", it really means "my liquor glass started speaking to me, and it kept chanting "Monkey Island 2 Remake!" over and over.

That's what I did.

AndrewC: The remake never wanted to be a fanboys wet dream; this is what fanboys don't generally understand: when a developer launches a remake of an old game it's to draw in a NEW crowd of players and maybe get some sales from the old fans. Another funny thing is that most of the people I've spoken to and most of the forums are actually pleased with this remake.

Actually, the whole remake seems pretty much built for fanboys of the original - while being able to flip back and forth between the original and SE versions was a clever touch, there were way too many concessions to the old engine for me to think it would really appeal to a new generation of players.
One of the first locations, the SCUMM bar, made this really obvious. The pirate swinging on the chandelier in stop-motion, and the close-ups when entering dialog, made SE feel like it was still an old game (well behind the current standard of Telltale or Microids) - bringing the whole thing up to current graphical and animation standards would have made the remake a lot more immersive.
Lots of scenes, like the witch's shop and the Fettucini brothers' tent, could have also really benefited from some artistic license... but instead we pretty much got high-res copies of the original scenes.

See, this is why it's hard to do and that you can't please everyone at the same time: you say that it's pretty much hi-res copies of the original scenes, TheJoe says that they moved too far from the original style of the game.
Without directly addressing the people who clearly hated the SE, count me among the people who loved it.
After getting the XBox Live version I even nabbed a copy for my ipod touch (which wasn't nearly as fun).
I'm excited for the new game and it seems that most fans are. Given that, it's hard to get into a substantive debate over a debate that our side has already won.
As long as they follow the same formula as the first SE (allowing on the fly switching to the old graphics, etc.) I'll be looking forward to this one. The original MI2 was far more enjoyable than the first game.

This is such an understatement, bansama. Such a huge understatement.

Well that's certainly true I guess >_>

They also needed money and the company was out of ideas so they remade a game they knew about.
