Psyringe: Did he explain what that purpose is? I mean, explaining "we did it on purpose and it'll stay that way" isn't particularly helpful without explaining what they are actually trying to achieve.
Seems it's for the iPad generation. And it seems they "forgot" to program it to be usable on a PC.
Out of curiosity, who owns the actual content of mobygames - database, user reviews, etc.? In case this is just the first step towards a continually less useable website, would it be legal to scrape the contents and use them in another website? A bit similar to the OpenOffice / LibreOffice history, where a huge company bought a formerly free project, but the people who wanted it to stay free could simply use the code to fork their own free version. (Not that I'd think such a fork would be warranted right now for mobygames, I'm just curious for the future.)
It's my understanding that once submitted it "belongs" to Mobygames. from their ToC:
By submitting (e.g., uploading or otherwise transmitting) Content to the MobyGames web site, you warrant that you have all rights necessary to submit such Content free and clear of any rights of any third party. Further, by submitting Content, you assign all worldwide rights, title and interest in and to such Content to Mobygames, including all copyrights in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed. You waive any and all moral rights that you may have in the Content.
