Aside from the new layout any new features? I still can't access the site for unknown reasons.

Crosmando: Any of you guys ever come across a game so obscure it's not even on mobygames?
Not quite what you asked, but sometimes I'm surprised how long it takes for _new_ games to appear listed in MobyGames.

There were also some older (PC) games I didn't find in their database, but I don't remember right now, even I have forgotten them... And then of course mobile games and all the indie games, I'd be surprised if they are all in MobyGames. There are just so many of them.
It's understandable. Who would really want to catalog every ios shovelware that gets released? It's good to remember the past of video games, the present not so much.
The use of columns that lead to endless scrolling seems quite popular in site redesigns lately, doesn't it?
Either that or MobbyGames and GOG took the same course of redesigning - I know, I'm being a bit mean now, but seriously what's up with this design choice?

Anyone checked the feedback thread in their forum (which looks yikes, btw)? Lots of unhappy people. And they did a closed preview in Dec 2012 asking for feedback, but it looks like nth got really changed or improved.

If it's here to stay, it's going to take a lot of getting used to it.
*sigh* Even more long and slim columns that force you to scroll down in order to see screenshots, with lots of unused space left beside them. And "where to buy" in a more prominent space than any 'what this game is about' or 'how this game looks like' info. It's as if they took their cue from GOG's new layout. Curse these hip 'smartphone' trends in good ol' web design! :(

EDIT: And I should try and read the last post in a thread before involuntarily repeating its content. At least this shows that HypersomniacLive is not alone with his initial reaction. ;)

I don't feel sad for the site.

I feel sad for the users and all the hard work they poured into a place where they have no voice whatsoever.

I don't regret leaving that place years ago.
What the... this is awful.

IAmSinistar: Looks like it's been monetise to maximise the revenue stream. Or in the other words, the redesign seems primarily focused on generating cash better than in meeting the user needs. That often happens when a free site becomes successful. I can't fault the owners for wanting to make more profit from their work, but usually such projects suffer as a result.

Wishbone: I'm surprised this didn't happen earlier. I assume GameFly is behind this, since they bought Mobygames a few years ago.
Yip seems gamefly now think, that it's been long enough to start forcing their ideas on the people there that help creating the site. and reading what Corn Popper wrote in the feedback thread it seems they don't care really what people say about the redesign
The main layout of the site is probably not going to change. The fixed width of the site is on purpose like many sites that are out there now with changing backgrounds

Did he explain what that purpose is? I mean, explaining "we did it on purpose and it'll stay that way" isn't particularly helpful without explaining what they are actually trying to achieve.

Out of curiosity, who owns the actual content of mobygames - database, user reviews, etc.? In case this is just the first step towards a continually less useable website, would it be legal to scrape the contents and use them in another website? A bit similar to the OpenOffice / LibreOffice history, where a huge company bought a formerly free project, but the people who wanted it to stay free could simply use the code to fork their own free version. (Not that I'd think such a fork would be warranted right now for mobygames, I'm just curious for the future.)

The mods at Moby are very picky about informaton. I've submitted a couple of games there and it's always the same hassle getting the info just right. I guess it has its own effect in terms of that many would be info submitterts do it once and after they've gotten frustrated, they are not likely to do it again.

I think it would be better if it worked more like Wikipedia. People would submit info and the other users would verify it and alter it if needed.
Do MB not have have some 90's shareware stuff, I notice they don't have Aleshar, one of my favorites (http://www.abandonia.com/games/391)

Seems it's for the iPad generation. And it seems they "forgot" to program it to be usable on a PC.

It's my understanding that once submitted it "belongs" to Mobygames. from their ToC:
By submitting (e.g., uploading or otherwise transmitting) Content to the MobyGames web site, you warrant that you have all rights necessary to submit such Content free and clear of any rights of any third party. Further, by submitting Content, you assign all worldwide rights, title and interest in and to such Content to Mobygames, including all copyrights in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed. You waive any and all moral rights that you may have in the Content.

Yes, I even hosted a giveaway some time ago based around 3 games that I own which were not (at that time) featured on MobyGames (plus a freeware game). Those were:
Mer Innebandy (the first commercial floorball game ever released)
Deo Gratias (Obscure and rather crummy god game by Cryo)
SL The Game (A surprisingly good game about public transportation in Stockholm)
And HeroCore, a nice little freeware game.

Don't worry bro, at the day of Judgement when we all stand before God Almighty for our sins. The mobile and tablet uses will surely be the first to be thrown into the pit of fire to be eternally tortured by Satan for being such utterly intolerable hipster cunts.
