Hello guys! (My first topic ever, hope it wasn't done before.) Sooo... metagames. Do you like them? Have favourites? I'm talking about games like The Stanley Parable (only played the mod so far - but I freakin' loved it to bits), Atum (a Unity game, where you play as a player). These are also my favourites. Have any suggested metagames to try? :)
*small bump*
Does this count? ;)
Social Justice Warriors (Didn't try it myself though.)
I'm kinda interested in this whenever it comes out. It's by a Bioshock dev and it's where you're an AI turned sentient in a game-in-development and you've to rewrite the game to your suiting in order to be "free". All the while, you've to hide from the devs by disguising your actions as just simple glitches.

Antichamber is sort of like that, and a pretty interesting game too. Challenges your notions of instructions in games and expected things to do.

Another surprising example, if you ask me, is Spec Ops: The Line. You start out playing it assuming it is just some typical cover-based military shooter involving some random army grunts, but it ends up being some sort of crazy thought-experiment where the game is directly addressing you (the player) and making you question yourself and what you're doing.
To me a meta game is a second gameplay layer. Like a turn based map connecting and influencing real-time battles. :P

Maybe... I'm not quite sure :D But looks interesting nonetheless :)

Ooooh, Antichamber, I almost forgot about that. Also I remember TotalBiscuit talking about Spec Ops that it's a deconstruction of the genre or something along those lines.

Depends on definition, of course :D

I always thought that meta game was the definition for following the rules imposed by the community (since i heard it on ganes like League of Legends ) and that Breaking the fourth wall is what it was called for the games/situations mentioned on the op. Living and learning i guess...

Btw, that Atum game looks amazing, i was watching a video and the solutions to pass the obstacles is mind blowing, definitely on my radar, i hope that it ends here on gog.

Funny that i was initially dismissing the game since i was having a brain fart and associating the game's name to portuguese meaning (Atum = Tuna).

Well, it's just the term that I use for these games. I may be using it wrongly :) And yeah, when I first saw Atum I was like that too. It's got some really great ideas.
Also, "Tuna" - now there's a great name for a game! :D

According to wikipedia it's both:

"Metagaming is any strategy, action or method used in a game which transcends a prescribed ruleset, uses external factors to affect the game, or goes beyond the supposed limits or environment set by the game. Another definition refers to the game universe outside of the game itself."

I also wonder if Atum won't be in the same situation as Braid, it has that mind blowing puzzles early but then it becomes trivial (still a good game).

Hmhm... so the part in MGS where you fight Psycho Mantis is also a metagame. The more you know :D
Hotline Miami has a nice meta edge both to it's story/gameplay.

Suda51 games can be right up your alley as well.
