tinyE: There was a game actually called that? Man I thought asking the guy at Target if they had Gradius was tough.

Maighstir: Please try to pronounce "Daermon N'a'shezbaernon".
You should probably add a disclaimer there. You don't want to be held responsible for that accidental lethal tongue whiplash.

You're right, though the name bears little importance today, house Do'Urden no longer exists, with the exiled Drizzt Do'Urden being the last to bear that name. I believe their mansion was destroyed with them, wasn't it?
I remember it but I never had it. Wanted to get it when it came out but the Powers That Be just didn't make it happen. Later on, when playing Baldur's Gate and facing Drizzt i got the itch again to get it but it never happened. It would be nice to play it.

I don't know much of the guy, except that you should turn off the flash when trying to take his photograph.

GoodGuyA: It would be especially cool if we could get Forgotten Realms: Unlimited Adventures too and spark that community back up.
avatar
Leroux: Definitely, and I'm sure they would appreciate it, as it's a very friendly and welcoming community! (Are you part of it, by chance?)

Lou: Dungeon Hack was fun to play with - I used it to teach my three young girls how to dungeon crawl at the time. Let them create the dungeon and have at it.
avatar
Leroux: Do you mean to say that Dungeon Hack also allowed you to create your own dungeons, or did I misinterpret that last sentence and you're only referring to the random dungeons created by the game?
You set the parameters - if memory serves: Number of levels, number of types of foes per level, and some others. Then the game randomly generated the dungeon based on your parameters.

GoodGuyA: Afraid not, though I did check by on my research. I'm just a general modding fan, and I find it remarkable that such a piece of software existed back in 1993, and even more that people are still developing with it! If I ever get back on that thing which I've put on the sidelines, I may well come by.

I still think that with these games, despite the fact that people found them underwhelming, there's a legacy there that should be preserved. These games were important to the development of the RPG genre, and in the end, what's the problem having them here anyways. Of course, a couple D&D games should not be here because they're plain broken (Descent into Undermountain, grrrr!), but the whole ridiculous thing with rights to these products are insane.
There was also the Bard's Tale Construction Set around that time maybe a year or two earlier.

Ah, yes, now I remember.

Strangely enough, apparantly it has never really caught on with the modding fans. Not just that there isn't an active community for it anymore, but there never seems to have been anything remotely similar to the FRUA community in the first place ...

The Bard's Tale Construction Set...Was anything decent ever made for it?
Bard's Tale Construction Kit - What If?

Salvatore sure did like to make very long unpronounceable names. Drizzt's name being one of the easier names in his books.
Thankfully, I never saw this game was out way back when. PCs where expensive back then, I was poor, and I might have gone all Walter White to get money for a PC to play that game.
Voted. I only got to play the floppy version (which lacks the centaur character if I recall correctly) not the CD one.

Aurun101: does anyone remember this game? I would love it if G.O.G got it!!!! Id pay £20!
If you really want it, you could try looking for this on amazon.com or ebay:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Forgotten_Realms_Archives

It comes with a lot of great classic Forgotten Realms games, including Menzoberranzan.
Or this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AD%26D_Masterpiece_Collection

Includes the games so far listed in this thread. Fairly inexpensive.

I haven't played through Menzoberranzan yet, but I did really enjoy the Dark Sun games. Al-Qadim was a pretty decent action RPG too. (Al-Qadim was probably my favorite D&D setting growing up.)

Crosmando: Where the real awesomeness is, is the Ravenloft games.
You think so? I thought the Gothic horror feel that Ravenloft is supposed to have translated pretty ineptly to the PC; not really a genre that seems to call for extensive dungeon crawls or fighting trash mobs.

Man, I wish I would have gotten people talking like this when I was trying to stir discussion about these old games! Guess it's something that just has to come naturally.

As far as I can tell, it was just given a straightforward treatment. Games like Al-Qadim and Dark Sun had things unique to their settings besides, well, their settings. It's a harder thing to work with that Frgotten Realms. I know because I've Dm'd it (probably not all that well though). Just like schlocky B-movies thinks monsters = horror, games like this assume that a slightly foreboding atmosphere will have you quaking. Still, these games are worth learning from.

They are 20+ old games. So, there are a lot of people on this forum that were not even born when they came out. I'm forty, so my excuse is I didn't own a computer back then and I was too poor to afford one. The Sega Genesis\PS1\Nintendo was 1/10 of the price of a computer back then.

Don't mind me, I'm just full of vinegar and all that! It's just a shame when you have a direct passion to do something and you're unable to, but that's neither here nor there. I really do hope people vote for these games though and bring the attention to GoG. It would be awful for these games to never again be available, especially the Gold Box series.
