any word on a discount on me2?

Egotomb: They gave it 96% at IGN. I think everybody should consider buying it if they can afford to, even if it's only to encourage other developers to raise the bar.
To anybody who talks of using pirate copies, cmon guys I'm not exactly a saintly figure but please give credit where it's due, we all gain in the long run.

Andy_Panthro: Um... just because something gets >90% doesn't make it instantly worth buying.
I've enjoyed many games that got 70-80% scores, and I'd much rather support those games which were big on ideas but rough around the edges.
Also, in the case of ME2, I wasn't that impressed by ME1 (enjoyed it, but in no rush to get the second one).

Oh come on even a cynic would have to admit games don't get 96% every day,. in fact there have been only 9 games on IGN that have matched or bettered that since the Win95 days. If it's just not your cup o' tea then that's fair enough.

So just because a a reviewer gives a game an arbitrary score that supposedly is pretty high on the scale that the reviewer uses, everyone needs to like and buy it?

I loved ME1 but I can definitely see why people have complaints about it. The side missions were definitely repetetive (recycled world settings and interior areas), and while I personally enjoyed driving the Mako, I can understand how it could be damned frustrating for some people. And if you put the side missions aside, the main story is pretty short. So yeah, there's cause for complaint there. That being said, I really enjoyed the universe they built, the characters, and the story itself and I'm hoping ME2 is as good or even that much better.

I can't tell anybody what to do, I'm just airing my thoughts, you don't have to agree that's the beauty of a forum :)

Weclock: any word on a discount on me2?

Amazon has the best pre-order deal, IMO ($47, free shipping, and $10 off your next game purchase from Amazon). Other than that, nope.

Sure, I'm just saying that a random score doesn't make anything worth buying, instead it's what each potential customer thinks of the product that may make it worth buying for that particular customer.
The reviewer probably liked the game, and I have no doubt many other people will too, but the numbered score is not what I'm looking at when trying to decide which pieces of entertainment I'm going to buy (if that were the case I'd buy a lot of stuff I'd never actually want taking up place on my shelves). I preordered the collector's edition of ME2 because I liked the first game.

HAHAHAHAHA, IGN
I've been playing the game pretty much all day today and I can tell you it's nowhere near a 96. To me it feels like an 80, or a high 70.

TBH that's what I think the first one was worth. IGN seems to just automatically give any highly anticipated game an Editor's Choice anyway.

For stuff I think I might want but aren't sure about and for which there is no demo, I tend to look for negative yet eloquent reviews and see if they mention the things that annoy me. Its way too hard to find the downsides in a review that could be condensed into "OMFG, BESTEST GAEM EVAR!!".
As an example, I've never seen a positive review of CoD4 that mentions the endless respawns until you trip the trigger and the fact that the entire game cannot progress without your direct intervention
Bioware games are the exception to pretty much every rule I have though (save the paying $110 one and buying second hand one), they're the only game developer who has never disappointed me

Well, IGN did criticize New Super Mario Bros. Wii for its lack of innovation, going so far as to call 'Splosion Man a superior platformer in a front page fanboy-crushing news feature.
(Disclaimer: I really enjoyed New Super Mario Bros. Wii)

Hehe, that's funny because I'm pretty sure most games today have ZERO innovation whatsoever, save for the few that attempts to "redefine the genre" (in PR-speak) and either a) doing a good job or b) failing miserably. Because we all know playing it safe is SUCH A BAD IDEA.

Yeah. Even a brilliant game that plays well, and should therefore sell well, can perform poorly at retail. It is an absolute crime that Eternal Darkness didn't sell ten bajillion copies.

Well IIRC it was only made for the Gamecube. So that explains everything.
