Mixture of the RPS series of posts on Solium Infernum and the other thread on Strategy Games got me wondering.
Does anyone know of any good 4x games with a fantasy theme and the ability to use magic? Magic as in direct-damage spells/whatever (even if just in the form of an ICBM) or for the traditional Espionage-style thingies of other 4x games. And preferably from pretty early in the game, since non-direct attacks (missiles and the like, for the Civs) tend to be late game, and Espionage sucks until late game in any space 4x (and forever, if your opponents have half a brain :p)
I am preferably looking for something that is available from GoG, Impulse, or Steam (in that order :p), just for convenience. Age isn't too big of an issue, although shiny is always nice :P
Thanks, and a big shiny Answer-flag to whoever gives me something that looks fun first.

There is a fantasy empires mod for Space empire 4, which is a turn based 4x space game. Space Empires 4 is quite good, but I haven't played the fantasy empires mod.

I just saw that it's multiplayer only, but there may be some way to get singleplayer working.
Thanks, Elemental looks great. Debating whether to pre-order or not (the rumored Collector's Edition gets my heart all a flutter).
I'll give Fall from Heaven a shot. I actually meant to play that months ago when I bought Civ4 on Impulse, but I ended up playing Colonization all the time :p
I'll give the demo of Majesty a shot. Was looking for a more turn-based game (more relaxing, easier to screw around), but I have heard good (and bad) things about it.
Same with King Arthur. Will give the demo a shot.

anjohl: No, it's actually NOT illegal to download, thanks. Maybe in Denmark it is, but in North America, it's perfectly legal.

In the US it is technically a violation of copyright law. Now there is the question of actually being prosecuted, but just because no one will do anything about it doesn't make it legal.

Exactly. I'm still waiting for the documentation that it is "perfectly legal", Anjohl.
Downloading abandonware is not legal.
Now that that's settled, let's discuss fantasy 4x games.
Elemental: War of Magic....
Nothing else needs to be said. It's a Stardock 4x game. What more could you want? (Yes I've had it pre-ordered for about a year now, and plan on getting the physical box shipped to me as well. Which if they follow the same pattern they'll be sending out the collectors editions to people that pay $5 for a physical box with the digital order) :)

Incorrect. Copyright law clearly states that a company must protect it's property to maintain it's copyright.
The fact that sites liek Abandonia exist essentialyl legalize the downloading of the games on them, unless they are asked to pull a game down.

You're confusing copyright and trademark law.

Bingo. Trademarks need to be defended or else they can be lost, not so with copyrights (unfortunately). However, abandonware sites are able to exist because (non-commercial) copyright infringement is a civil offense, meaning that to be enforced the copyright holder has to bring suit in civil court. If the copyright holder no longer cares about a work then while it's still illegal to distribute that work nobody is going to come after anyone for doing so.
So basically what it comes down to is: sites like Abandonia are doing something illegal, but no one is likely to go after them for it, but it's still bad form to link to such sites here.
Precisely. "You'll probably get away with it" does NOT equal "it's legal".

Thats pretty much the shield most (not all!) of the Abandonware crowd have been using since day one. No one does anything about it so it's ok.

"Most of the sites seem to be "No one does anything about it so we're not going to stop."
It tends to be the users of the sites that think it's ok and legal, not the people that run the sites themselves. :)

A lot of abandonware sites do have noble goals of preserving games. In fact a lot of them remove games once they are available for purchase again which is why I don't like to tar them all with the same brush.
Most (again I said MOST!) of the users however are either ignorant of the law or simply don't care. There was a thread ages ago where an abandonware site users were complaining that the Heroes of Might and Magic games were now being sold on GOG and many of them made it quite clear they had no intention of ever buying them as they were free once. The fact those games were always owned by someone and were never actually free does not matter to them.

Oh man, I'm so looking forward to elemental ^ ^
I tried to participate in the beta for a bit. But Stardock betas are really not that much fun unless you really can pour some time in thinking, testing and suggesting :P
Dominions 3 is for me the ultimate fantasy 4x game and the game that has by far burnt the most time in my life. It has a steep learning curve but amazing community of helpful fans to make it easier. You have to play MP via PBEM to appreciate it and I have been playing pretty much regularly since October 2007.
