Linux and Windows XP user. I use Windows Xp for gaming, family and clients. Recently I've bought the Humble Indie Bundle V and it was pleasant to find that some of the games had deb packages for Debian/Ubuntu and forks.

gooberking: I've seen you talk Linux before, I'm counting you in, as long as some of that use is personal, even though (if I recall correctly) you tend to prefer the ease of gaming on Windows to the alternative.
Yeah, I use it at home too, for what might be called (eye-rolling-ly) fun.
Just a thought here.

Since we do have a thread for people who want games linux and mac games here plus there is a wish thread for linux users as well. Would making a wish thread for mac games sound like a good idea? At least we could see what games plus the numbers for each of the games wanted for the mac.

Granted I know the normal fit is that the PC is best suited for games but I think the times have changed.

I bought the bundle and had little issue with playing the Linux natives. Lone survivor isn't working and looks to be a flash game maybe. Its such a small production I had trouble finding out much about it or a solution, but on the whole I was very pleased at how normal it was to install and run the native versions.(OK Limbo is actually a Crossover thing, but its good enough)

If there isn't one it doesn't hurt to make one. I tend to try and lump the two platforms together in a sort of strength in numbers attempt. Plus a lot of the issues / solutions we deal with are the same. Making a game that was designed for Windows tends to make it harder to port elsewhere, but if someone took the trouble to make something Mac or Linux friendly, then chances are they have a program that will port to all three platforms without near as much fuss.

I would say Mac and Linux users are probably very different kinds of people, but due to our collective market insignificance, and some technical cross pollination, we do tend to get fused together when gaming is the topic.

When it comes to how much interest Mac gaming can garner on its own, it seems like the Linux users in this community are either more vocal or numerous. I'm kind of surprised by that, having had the understanding that Macs were a bigger deal.

I think it's because we get bashed so many times that we need time to recover. :p

I know myself still try to get any good game made from ground up for the mac or linux understood by the devs. So maybe this time around as we have seen here that not only the linux users but mac users will speak out more.

And its a very strange request!

If a game has a Mac/OS X version and it is made and supported by the developer please allow the option to download the Linux version if at all possible.

I never knew a Mac version of the Witcher exited. Let alone The Witcher 2???
I mean that would be a sure fired way for me to support not only my fix for mac games but to GOG as well.

Those aren't native ports of Witcher for Mac OSX. They are regular Windows versions shipped with Wine. That Wine is patched however, for example fixing some bugs in Witcher 1, and unfortunately those bug fixes weren't sent to Wine upstream by CDPR developers. So those who play Witcher on Linux under Wine still have that bug with blank health and toxicity bars and etc. I wish they'd collaborate better with the Wine project if they find it useful to ship Witcher games with Wine wrapper for Mac.

The Witcher 1 is indeed a Wine port - my guess is they made some code/asset change to the Witcher rather than some settings/code in Wine to get rid of those graphical bugs, but I don't know that for certain. The reason I say that is that you can exchange WINE engines and the game will still work, so I think they must have done something to the DX9 or the game code/assets that ship with the port.

However, the Witcher 2 will be a native port.

I occasionally use my Mac for gaming, but my wife uses it mostly.

Yup the Mac version of the Witcher 1 is Steam only for the moment (and is a Wine port) while The Witcher 2 will be a native port and will be out in the fall. I don't know where it will be sold, but sadly probably not GOG - regardless should be cool. :)

Do you mean that CDPR ported Witcher 2 engine to OpenGL? Then they can release the Linux port too probably. And at least those releases can be sold on GOG? Since CDPR and GOG work together, all those arguments about support problems should be less relevant.
