bansama: While death is used to signify failure of a puzzle, the game is no different to any other puzzle game where there is either the correct solution, or the need to restart the level.
I don't agree at all, sorry. In Braid for instance you really had to study the scene and figure out how to accomplish something. Death was not the sole source of puzzle solving, not at all. In Limbo you just see what kills you and then do the opposite.

orcishgamer: Just thought I'd drop in here to say buy this game if you can afford it at all. The atmosphere is a work of art. You don't even get all that mad when you die, just kind of laugh nervously.

Cameron: +1. Most overrated game released in a while. I bought it day one (360), it was solid and I enjoyed it but some of the game of the year praise it got was ridiculous. Considering it was vastly inferior to Super Meat Boy (meaning it wasn't even the best of the year in the platforming genre), it gets way to much credit. Nice to see it on PC though
avatar
orcishgamer: It gets all the credit due to the great atmosphere and art style.
For sure, but atmosphere and art do not merit game of the year consideration. Gameplay should be the overwhelming factor in those discussions
Just finished this game this very night, loved it! The atmosphere, art-style and gameplay just comes together perfectly for me. Someone said that Super Meat Boy was superior in here, I'd have to strongly disagree as I found Meat Boy pretty boring to be honest, played it for about half an hour before quitting, whereas this game I just felt compelled to finish it. Gets a bit weak around the factory levels but then there's that bit, blast can't say any more without spoilers, but I just gaped at that point!

Taleroth: It's a bunch of simple things that make death really not matter to the player.
Indeed, most other games I'd have ended up screaming and ragequitting the amount of times you die in this game, especially if you then have to spend five minutes getting back to where you were, but the checkpoints were spot on I think. And it's not like dying is necessary to finish a puzzle by trial and error, rather it's to see how the puzzle/trap plays out I thought, so you can see what happens.

StingingVelvet: In Limbo you just see what kills you and then do the opposite.
Only if you don't sit back and study the scene yourself. There are only a couple of places where you really need to die to get a clue to part of the puzzle. The two crushers being one of them. But most puzzles you can figure out well enough without having to simply see what kills you. if you're just walking around to see what kills you, you're not exactly playing the game very well.

Actually I felt the gameplay was solid, but lots of games have solid gameplay, imo (and again, only opinion) writing in such an excellent atmosphere is much more rare and is what elevates the game so much. I actually count it for more than gameplay, but again, that's a personal point of view (though I suspect others share it which is why you saw all the GOY feelings).

Yumi: I'm getting tobe's vertical adventure first and then i'll get it.

Bodkin: Don't do it, unless you try demo or something. It is the same thing over and over again. Go for Spelunky (free), it is much better.
to be honest i tried the demo and i couldn't make it work ^^; but my computer is really old and can be problematic with new indie games (mainly b/c i avoid installing certain patches and sps). i'm getting a new comp really soon and eh it's cheap, the reviews are favourable, i've seen the videos and it seemed like exactly the kind of old school platformer i love. i'll make sure to try the demo first then. thanks.

@spelunky - i know that it's awesome, but i'm afraid of trying it. i can't afford serious addiction because i can get insanely obsessed and i've seen what it does to people ^^; thanks for the suggestion though.

StingingVelvet: So am I insane or is this game insanely overrated?
I didn't even bother finishing the demo. Not for me, I guess.

You should definitely finish the demo, just to see what comes along...

I don't know if I'm that interested, personally. It's probably very good at what it does, but what it does doesn't include appealing to me. I quite liked the aesthetic though. But the game itself left me very cold.

I can't recall what it was anymore, but I had been saving 800 MS points to buy something and hadn't got around to it. I played the Limbo demo while drunk on a Friday night and just had to buy it. Come to think of it I think I spent most of my time playing that game drunk, perhaps that's the key:)

If I play a game drunk I expect to die a lot. Which is invariably funny, naturally. So yes, that would probably make the problems I have with the game less prominent.

Well, the random, barely warned of deaths were the amusing part of that game to me. I got over it rather fast since it was clearly the intended method of play. And, being drunk makes stuff like that even more amusing as you say, so yeah, that was probably it.

At least I now know when would be a good time to give the demo another go.
[rant]I can't believe how bad the GOG search is. This is the only thread with limbo in the title and it was the very last search result.[/rant]

Anyway, I haven't grabbed it yet even though I have been hoping for a computer port. I am just a little gun shy buying Windows only games that don't work in CrossOver. Fingers crossed it will soon get some SteamPlay love.

That's not because the search is necessarily bad, but because the results are sorted backwards; it's been like that ever since leaving beta (heh). Most relevant results are always on the last page. It has been pointed out before, but no luck.
