@orcishgamer. Shut up. It's called faith. Faith in "maybe it'll get better this time". Faith in "maybe they'll start paying attention to the letters and kill off the crap characters". You ask "everyone you know" and ask them "You watched the SG series to their ends, but were you disappointed?", and they'll probably say "yes".

What I don't understand is why Firefly didn't even get a second season. Probably because it was aired on Fox. Those idiots never know a good thing when they see it. Or hear it. Or stuff it in their faces. And then when they finally do catch on to something good, like something good that they cancelled twice before, they don't recognize when it starts to turn to crap and then lets it go on to long, and spawn spin-offs.

Sogi-Ya: because all the other releases (including another version of the first season) were released by a Canuck-a-dian company that edited /altered all the scenes with nudity or sex (it was a showtime series after all).
This kind of thing always pisses me off.

Agreed, good sir! If I had a heart, it would have been broken by that scene, though. :(

crazy_dave: One thing though about Firefly, because of its aborted status judging the overall quality can be hard. After all it didn't get the time it should've to develop and finish its plot. On the other it also didn't have time to sink into mediocrity as some shows that start off strong do.
I maintain that the primary reason Firefly is regarded so well is because Whedon wasn't given enough time to fuck it up (I think Serenity is an indication of the direction he would have ended up going with things if he'd been given a couple more seasons).
My opinion of Firefly (as a huge Science Fiction fan) is well, "murki". The show is like stale bread, imo. It's good and nice when you are hungry, but as soon a something better shows up I'm jumping ship (oh, the puns).

It's not that I didn't like the show, the characters and actors were great for the most part and some of the writing wasn't bad. But overall it felt very immature and "hipsterish" (I wouldn't have used that word, if it hadn't come up in the discussion before, but it fits so good). In all honesty, everything the show did good, Cowboy Bepop did better. The main draw was the charisma of the actors (especially the captain).

As a comparison: My favourite Science Fiction show remains Babylon 5. Hands down. And I really liked BSG 2003 before it went cuckoo (But I stuck with it to end and for some reason really like the last couple of episodes). Of the Star Trek shows DS9 was very decent during the later seasons (well, they did steal from the best). Heck, I even liked that "Space: Above and Beyond" more.

tl,dr: nice show, but imo overrated and there are better out there.

Edit: And as defining the cutest chick seems to be a vital part of this discussion, ;-) I pick the trained killing machine!

firefly should not be missed, also i agree the movie is a bit different, but still awesome, i love all those little moments where you think there comes the cliche, and then it turns your expectations around, or the cliche is played out in a way thats just too funny

also one of my fav moments is the moment everybody realises what the peopel are singing in the tavern :)
If anyone's only ever watched it when it was broadcast on Fox (*spit*) then they need to watch it in the order it was supposed to be shown in. Great dialogue, great characters and a great premise (no tiny laser guns, no faster-than-light travel, etc.) and definitely canceled well before its time (the reason Dollhouse (also on Fox) lasted two seasons is because of the backlash from when Firefly was canceled).

Babylon 5 is an intelligent, well thought out adult show, with characters (and story) that make characters from every other sci fi show pale and two dimensional in comparison. I don't think that anyone will ever be able to make a show that will be even remotely as epic and profound as B5 (i'm a fangirl obviously). After i finished it i couldn't watch any other sci fi for a loooong long time because they all seemed too childish and superficial. I think firefly was the first sci fi i watched after this long break (well apart from occasionally watching the nth re-run of tng). And well, I loved it. It's the put-your-brain-to-rest and let yourself be entertained kind of show (and honestly after b5 i don't expect more from any sci fi show). it doesn't really go beyond pure entertainment but it does that really well. Plus the whole setting was refreshing, and (at least to me) the characters quite likable.

I know that everyone was raving about bsg2003, but the little i saw didn't impress me. It seemed way, waaay too angsty and dark (for some odd reason people really seem to like excessive angst nowadays), pretentious, the characters really unlikable and stereotypical and everyone seemed to have been in relationships with everyone (something i strongly dislike, and that makes it seem a little like a soap). How mistaken am I?

As far as other whedon shows go, I liked buffy when i was younger and regardless of what people might say about it, it's a show that has a lot of appeal to teens and people who don't normally like fantasy, and as such it beats the hell out of the modern shows/books/movies that deal with vampires. Unlike them, it has some wit and doesn't insult one's intelligence, and both sexes can find something in it to like. I saw only a few eps of dollhouse which i didn't like, it was bland. And I loved doctor horrible's sing along blog, even though the ending was anti-climatic. Dunno about the rest.

Yumi: Babylon 5 is an intelligent...

I know that ...
(I cut off most of the post, hope you don't mind)

Anyway, new BSG is certainly worth watching - I saw most of it BEFORE Babylon 5 (yea I know I was an uncultural barbarian), and while it pulls some really cheap twists, I find it deals with Sci-Fi, myths and religion in a really interesting and unique way. It was certainly worth the time I put into it and while first season is a bit slow, it gets better from there. Not NEAR Babylon 5 level of awesome (I find I appreciate the show more and more I think about it - there's nothing better than a thought-trough story... Shame Crusader or how was it called turned out so horribly), but it's worth a watch. It does get kinda soapy at times thou. And melodramatic. And other times, your jaw's gonna drop.

Oh yeah, oh yeah, BUFFY :D I was actually watching that about 2 years back, when I was a teenager I wrote it off as completely stupid. Well turns out I was an idiot, that show IS quite ... Eh ... Idiotic, but it knows that and doesn't try to be more. It even makes fun of itself most of the time, which makes times it takes itself seriously even more awesome - shame my wife won't rewatch it with me, because ... Well ... She sort of can't stop laughing at the damn thing :D Just wanted to share that on Buffy, seldom I see someone who likes it.
low rated
I had to turn it off halfway through the pilot. After years of hearing how revolutionary it's supposed to be, I understood why Fox cancelled it.

Terrible pacing, boring characters, and wooden acting.

yeah, Half an episode, sure is PLENTY of time to get to know the characters, let them develop, lhe storyline unfold, etc.
most movies typically cover all that ground in the first 15 minutes.
