RaggieRags: snip
Thanks for the quotes. Looks like there is a glimmer of hope for more GK

I guess anything is possible now. A few months ago we never would have dreamed that we would see Wasteland 2 or (goodness, gracious me) a new Tex Murphy game!
For the life of me I can't figure out why this only has 3000 backers. Surely many, many more people played and loved the GK games.

My conclusion is that the adventure game community is unfairly punishing Jane because some of them were disappointed with Gray Matter (which was a very good game with a fantastic story but some development-related issues that were not within Jane's control).

The whole point of Pinkerton Road studios is for Jane to avoid the development hell from Gray Matter.

Despite all the knowledge about Gray Matter's complicated development, people still somehow hold it against Jane and have a very skeptical, negative attitude toward her.

It's quite sad, really. Jane's kickstarter has given the backers more information about the game concept than any of the other major project like Double Fine, which just said "classical point and click adventure". But people are holding out for some reason.

Simply put the rewards just aren't good enough at each level, one mentions get every game we make this year but only 1 game is planned and you get that at 15 bucks! add to that at the 15 bucks level you don't even get the beta (thats not until MUCH higher) and compared to other ones it's just not worth it...
$16 for a brand new game from an adventure gaming legend is too much?

Wow.

Compared to the same price on other offers like that? yes.
To get to the same level at the Double fine adventures 15 bucks level you have to spend...$50!
The rewards are fine. They shouldn't be the business model anyway. If that happens the whole point of Kickstarter vanishes - the idea is to get money to make a game, not to sell various packs of rewards that you then have to spend half the pledged amount to provide.

Exactly.

I haven't seen a fraction of this much complaining for any other kickstarter. It's so odd.

I'm not sure. The series had only 3 games, and only the first one was published in the golden age of adventure games. Compare it to series like King's Quest or Larry that had an earlier start and more games. Other short Sierra series, like Laura Bow, are also pretty much obscure.

I don't get anger over Gray Matter. I really enjoyed it myself. I'd like to see a sequel for that one as well. I think too many people were expecting The Best Game Ever and were disappointed it wasn't another GK. They forget that GK games were AAA releases from a big publisher, so it's an unfair comparison.

Unfortunately, I think there are people who only recognize Jane's name from that unfortunate Old Man Murray article about That Puzzle in GK3 that "killed" adventure games. It's even more unfortunate that the puzzle wasn't even designed by Jane. Someone else just threw the puzzle in there because they didn't have the time to implement Jane's original puzzle.
So, Jane had an interview with Gamesradar and apparently she's already in talk with Activision about getting the rights back for GK if her kickstarter will succeed. She also said that GK remakes are very likely to happen.

Jumping Christ, am I the only person in the universe who doesn't see any point at all in remakes?

Well it depends. The sierra VGA remakes of LSL1, KQ1, SQ1, PQ1 and Quest for Glory were pretty good, and definitely worthwhile but those games were running on very basic engines and had plenty of room for improvement. Also, they were being remade by a huge company with lots of money and talent.

I think GK remakes are unecessary because the originals have decent technology. Any attempt today to "improve" on them would be a backwards step as the budgets are likely to be smaller and the teams less experienced with Adventure games.

I wouldn't go as far as any point at all. They look nicer, which can make it feel like a new experience even though you're playing one of your favorite games. The Monkey Island remakes were lovely in that way and I look forward to getting some "HD" console re-releases now that I have a modern console.

Still overall I would agree that new content is best.

Yeah, I was admittedly exaggerating there. I agree with you on the VGA Sierra remakes; hell, I thought the QfG2 fan remake was wonderful. But as you said, the room for improvement there was enormous.

But GK1-3 absolutely are good enough as they are. There's nothing terribly wrong with them, except for GK3's horrid 3D engine which would require such a massive overhaul I'm quite sure it would not be worth the trouble.
I think remakes are almost necessary if they plan to continue the series. The name Gabriel Knight doesn't mean anything to the new generation of gamers, and the series has continuity.

I'm glad of remakes, like the Monkey Islands. These are great games and there's no reason to limit them for old-timers like us. I think more people should be able to play and enjoy them.

I don't know. I admittedly never played the MI remakes, but from what I've seen in various gameplay videos, it's pretty until it starts moving. Then it becomes just weird and floaty.

I'll probably pick up the remakes one of these days for the voice acting. But GK already has that, too.

A good enough writer, which Jane definitely is, can work with that.

Aren't they already? $6 apiece on GOG, all dressed up and ready to go. In the era of faux-32 bit nostalgia, I honestly do not think the very solid pixel art of GK1 is dated; the dialogue portraits of the CD version still look pretty damn good. And gameplay-wise, GK does not really subscribe to the dreaded Sierra philosophy at all, so there are no major obstacles in this respect, either.
