XYCat: man, 2K
not that i hate those guys, i actually like the games they publish, but their policy on DLCs sucks balls man

the most blatant case is Borderlands 2 with season pass that doesn't even include additional playable characters, none of the costumes and most importantly it doesn't even include all of the additional playable content dlcs. They're pretty cunning with their greed.

Niggles: Season Pass was only meant to include the essential DLC (main ones). With maybe 2 exceptions outside of this, the rest are unessential charachter skins?
no, the rest is two new playable characters (each with their own dlc that costs like 10bucks) and aside from costumes there are additional gameplay content dlcs that aren't included in the season pass.
But the point is that people are used to season pass containing everything, especially all the additional gameplay dlcs, not just bits and pieces when it costs almost the same as the base game itself. And people are also used to the label "game of the year" meaning the complete collection but 2K usually lures people to buy GOTY just to release some pretty expensive dlcs right after like with Civilization V.

What were the "2 exceptions" you mention? Were those things one might reasonably expect in a Season's Pass? I confess that I don't buy Xbox DLC anymore, but just wait for the Ultimate Platinum GOTY Complete Edition.

Well, there is always Oblivion with GOTY and GOTY Deluxe versions.

See the post above yours, 2 charachter DLC - Pscyho guy and the Mechro chick/kid (been a while since ive played could be wrong about the names haha - surprised me when i had to pay for the extra chars).
I never expected the skins to be part of the seasons pass (been a few golden keys which gave you certain free skins were neat though)

Yeah, those sure sound like Season's Pass content. It never fails, someone comes up with a term for something, people get used to the term, then marketers start abusing it until it means nothing again.

retsuseiba: Does anyone have them numbers on them Bioshock's? I mean, I always assumed that they were selling well and making a profit. But if even Irrational can't keep up then it could be a good indication (some might say obvious) that the current AAA model is a dying business.
Do remember that AAA titles need 1.5-3 million (sometimes even more) copies sold at full price just to break even. Anything under that is a flop. And the number keeps on climbing. Maintaining 100+ member studio is expensive business. Compare that to 10.000 - 100.000 copies required for usual indie title.
Huh.

Ah, well, if the next Bioshock game ends up being as good as Bioshock 2, I'm all for it.
I'm not sad for Bioshock. There will be more games. I'm not sad for Kevin Levine. He'll be fine.

However I'm pissed off that this is how Levine treats his employees. "I don't wanna make AAA games anymore. I'm firing you guys so I don't have to make my own Indie studio"

YOU FUCKING SELF-SERVING ARROGANT DICKHEAD! I'd except no less from EA, Actavision, Microsoft or Sony. But coming from a guy who makes games about evil jackasses who only care about money this is borderline comedy! Congratulations Kevin, you are Andrew Ryan now.

My prayers and sympathies go out to those who have lost their jobs. I hope they get picked up by someone better.

Edit

It seems that this wasn't simply pure ego on Levine's part but also down to the game going over budget. I can sympathise with that a whole lot more. I don't know which is the bigger factor but it seems to boil down to Kevin either way. Still, better to be a dreamer who dreamed to much than a backstabbing egoist.

HypersomniacLive: FTFY.
Don't forget Hardened and Deluxe.

To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally.
And I sincerely hope, with every fibre of my being, that this would include delivering them via gog as well, if only to make amends for the nightmarish Securom clusterfuck that was forced on players with Bioshock.

Gearbox/2K is the reason why I started a 'tag session' on steam the other day. Endorsing the 'dlcfest' tag for BL2 felt pretty good.

I know, I just don't remember seeing any reports on Bioshock & Infinite similar to that of Tomb Raider selling a bazillion copies and still not turning a profit (until last month, that is). All I have to work with is the positive reception of the Bioshock games. Hence my initial question.
Reading that thread, there doesnt seem to be any indication (in my mind) that they were in trouble and didnt make money from the games they had. Just looked like Livine took a different direction for future games - his comments seem to be intriguing to me especially aiming at more core gaming audience (will future games be more PC friendly?) & working on more narrative and replayable games - what can we interpret from that?.
