LBartley: So, have you tried the other downloaders that were suggested?
The jGOG downloader now goes to a dead link. The guy who WROTE the xGOG downloader recommended that I use the jGOG downloader instead. :S
LBartley: The AIR based downloader hasn't been updated since its introduction to my knowledge, so if it just magically stopped working, it's likely an issue on your end. I'm not one to blindly defend GOG, as most here are. But these really are unique circumstances on your end.
Not quite true. I bought my first GOG game in January 2010. I know it was updated in September or October of 2010, though I didn't purchase any games after that time. (If you look at the thread that I quoted, the thread was started when the update happened.)
LBartley: Perhaps your ISP is blocking required ports for the downloaders? Try installing something like peerblock that will show all attempted inbound and outbound connections. Obviously you won't want to have it doing any blocking during the process, but if you toggle the "show allowed connections" option, it should show you what is trying to connect to where.
Satellite is weird. My initial guess if there was a problem with DNS: All DNS is put through the sat company's DNS servers in Maryland. There's no way to change that, it's hard coded into the modem. So that's always my FIRST thought when I have problems. But the last couple of times (prior to the Sept/Oct update) that I've downloaded games from GOG, I had no problems.
I've just downloaded peerblock, though, and I'll see what it says.
LBartley: Worst case scenario, this updated downloader is being actively worked on, and is apparently due for release in a week or so. Just just mellow out until then.
Please, God. Yes, "mellow out" should be tattooed to my forehead.
LBartley: As for the alleged attacks, Yeah, I kind of did assume you were stupid. These kinds of questions tend to pop up a lot, and are often completely the fault of ignorance. Still, I wouldn't label my comments as attacks.
They still strike me as pretty hostile. I'm not dumb. I'm a programmer. I've worked with PCs since 1984. (That's not a typo, and I'm not talking Commodore 64s or Apple 2s - IBM compatible.)
While you wouldn't label your comments as hostile, you admit you assumed I was stupid. Since I'm not, it was pretty clear that you assumed that, and therefore...yes, hostile.
Though my grammar is pretty adequate, it ain't perfect. I've personally previously made the mistake of thinking that someone whose grammar really sucked was an idiot, treated them in a condescending manner, similar to the way that you responded to me, and found out he had a PhD in Mathematics. After that incident I lost that habit, and I hope you will, too. Assumptions aren't necessarily a good thing.
LBartley: I still do feel that your internet plan is ridiculous. The fact that other people use it as well doesn't detract from that fact.
It sucks sucks sucks sucks sucks. (Did I say it sucks? Especially with what I do for a living.)
But, it's what is available when you are living up in the mountains in an old log cabin with no grid electricity. It's *also* what's available when you live in rural Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana, etc...or Idaho, where I live.
I live in a place where even cellphones don't work. Recently things have advanced to a point that if I can spend $2500 on a mini-tower, I might be able to get cell-based internet. I'm considering it.
In the meantime, though, other than actual bandwidth limitations, the only drawback with satellite before now (in eight years) is the ping time. Slow ping times mean no MMPRPG shooters, which is fine, 'cause that isn't my thing. But in all this time other than live action shooters and large downloads (which I can normally compensate with a downloader app) I haven't had a sat problem, except for GOG. That wouldn't be saying much for a lot of people, but I spend almost 90 hours per week online, 60 of that working with some fairly complex applications. (lol. And 30 of f-ing around with game stuff.)
So as much as my connection sucks, GOG seems to be the exception to every rule on my computer.
Thanks for your suggestion. I'll try peerblock, and see what it says. I'm also thinking of downloading the downloader on my husband's XP home laptop. Maybe it'll have better luck.
