BlueMooner: Does anybody know how well GOG is doing? Are they raking in the cash? Making a decent profit? Just breaking water or are they losing cash daily? I'm not looking for exact numbers, was just casually wondering if anybody knew.
Mostly I'm wondering due to the forum here. While I love GOG, the forum is a bit... simple, IMO (no offense to the GOG staff who maintain it). I'm thinking perhaps the reason GOG doesn't do more with the forum is because they can't afford expensive web designers and new software. There have been requests for forum features that are never implemented, and I'm guessing the only reason they aren't is due to budget constraints.
Thoughts?
Considering their catalog and the amount of buzz they generate around the internet gaming community sites it seems reasonable to believe they are doing well but as for details I would not expect those.
As for the condition of the forums, part of it is probably just a matter of priorities as the company continues to grow (I am guessing) since they have a lot of fish to fry all at the same time. Only a small minority of GOG customers actually use the forums so I can understand how in the grand scheme of things, throwing a lot of money at this particular area versus other competing areas, say perhaps getting Linux support going (again, just a guess) might not be a high priority. They do work "good enough." We're all here and communicating, gripes and all.
So that's my guess. They will probably improve slowly over time but this I'd expect is a back burner item and it probably should be for GOG at this point. Although it is a big question mark to what extent Steam is going to continue bringing on classic games over there, that is a much bigger concern and therefore trying to focus resources on acquiring a broader catalog of DRM-free titles spanning not only the old but as new as possible too, just to compete and survive for the long haul would be a lot more important than spending time and money on working forums.
Resources are always limited for any business and they have to focus them where they will do the most overall good for the company.
That's my take on this stuff anyway.
