Good morning everyone. I'm new to GoG and a Mac user (MacBook Pro). Could someone kindly direct me to a sticky for using GoG with a Mac or if you are feeling very generous write up a few sentences telling me how to proceed with a Mac. I am primarily interested in BG / IWD / Planescape. Thanks in advance for your help; I look forward to becoming part of this community.

Try this.

It may seem lengthy but should cover most of what you need.
Indeed the thread Navagon linked to is the one to look at ... I would specifically use the directions Rampancy gave in that thread in post #6 (he gave several methods to get games working on the Mac and I used Wineskin and liked it a lot - first time I did it so it is easy to use, however some of the game specific directions in the GOGmix - next sentence - are for CrossOver games - same thing as Wineskin but paid for - which is post #1 in that thread). Here is a the same guy gave for game-specific directions. Here is another [url=http://www.gog.com/en/mix/gog_games_on_a_mac_and_how]GOGmix by a different guy.

The games you're interested in look like they are covered in both GOGmixes, so if they need some specific settings to get them to work, they should be in there. Have fun!

Buy a serious, gaming-focused, non-crappy crippled operating system? :-P

I was about to say I'm not aware of any current OS that is compatible with PCs and is gaming focussed. So I'm not sure what KingofGnG is going on about. But then that's nothing new.

Better than Mac OS X, for sure :-P

Time to derail the thread: It would be nice if there were a gaming focused OS that could be installed on a PC. Using the same hardware i have now just a separate OS optimised for gaming.
What's a "gaming operating system"?

Microsoft already set it up so, in theory, you can have the entire DirectX backcatalogue setup to go and allows current OpenGL to operate. Kernel optimizations, while beneficial to gaming, intrinsically have nothing to do with games. A Windows Manager that uses a minimum of resources may be beneficial to gaming, but has nothing to do with gaming in particular.

Is it supposed to be something ala the Windows 8 rumors that creates an instance on a hypervisor dedicated entirely to the videogame? Or something like Windows 7 already does of minimizing drag things associated with it when a games running? Or is it supposed to be like Linux? Or is a cartridge loader ala GRUB supposed to be a gaming "operating system."

Apple not being gaming focused is a perfectly valid snark if for no other reason they decided they'd control the drivers and don't take their job particularly seriously along those lines, and Amiga ruled Mac drooled, but what's this mythical "gaming focused" operating system supposed to entail?

An operating system for which people who make games tend to ensure compatibility. So far that seems to be XBox 360 and then only barely:(

If you count Nintendo DS, they've knocked stability out of the park.

Well, basically, Windows is an office-work focused operating system, gaming has always been a secondary function. It's more of a what-if thing.

Availability and price are not exactly top of the range though. Last time I checked I'd have to buy a system in Italy for a (&@#&ing) 1200 € and add on top Amiga OS 4.1 for another 150 or so....

If it was up to me , that would look like Amiga OS indeed... or like a sort of modern days 64 bits dos....

But given the nature of the industry and its appetite to seduce the casual gamer, that would probably look like a Wii OS or something like that : an "easy" interface, a solid drm management scheme and a dedicated shopping area... ;-)

IphoneOS? Mac OS is apparently becoming more like the former with the next version.

Or perhaps more conveniently a game mode in Windows. It's an idea that has been thrown around a fair bit but doesn't seem to have stuck yet.

I know you have a very personal view about reality and factual things, but.... the Windows gaming mode is called "DirectX" mode, and it's there since the Nineties. If you are able to see it, of course....
