For years now I've been avoiding RTS because the C&C and Warcraft series really burnt me out.

But now going through the backlog of things that I've missed, I've been trying out a lot of RTS's lately.

Over the past week I've picked up Sacrifice, Giants and Ground Control II from GoG (passed on the first Ground Control because they didn't implement an AI for single player Skirmish).

While the other two games are good, they're more action fantasy.

But just playing through the tutorial campaign I can say that GCII was way ahead of its time and still a bit more advanced than a lot of the new RTSs out there.
You might enjoy Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising.

Lol. This game is like one of those strange things, like Justin Beiber, that you've never heard of before and just seemed to have popped into existence over night.

I went scrambling to find this only to notice that it was released in 2001 by the now defunct Interplay. No digi sites carry it and obviously no retailers do either.

I found one brand new copy left, closing six hours from now, on an NZ auction site.

So I snagged it.

Thank you very much for your very good timing. XD
Mind control apes and use them to build and repair your base in Original War. Warlords Battlecry 3 is also good fun.
Wasnt that Hostile Waters game once on GoG? I just found a topic for it from back in 2008, where the hell did it go?!

Yeah, I only just now realized it isn't here anymore. It was removed for unspecified reasons. The GOG team has stated that they're working on bringing it back, but no news about it have been released for a long time.

Edit: The thread about it is here.

This is like the Obscure and Prey thing where developers are fighting over rights to their dusty old warez turning up on abandoned ware sites so they have to pull the titles indefinitely until one or the other says "Fine, here, you can have your dusty old warez."

Mind control apes and use them for labor? Too much like real life. I like a tint of fiction to my games.

I've heard that Warlords 3 has tons of praise but every time I look at it, it looks like a not so pretty version of Warcraft.

I'll kindly ask you not to compare that great game to Justin Bieber in any way, shape or form ;-p

I don't think I've ever seen anyone rush out and buy a game they've never heard of before, based on such a flimsy recommendation. Now I really hope you'll like it, otherwise I'll feel bad for having suggested it ;-)

As a game, it falls somewhere between Sacrifice and a more classic style of RTS. You'll spend a lot of your time controlling one of your units directly (although you can, to a certain degree, decide for yourself how much you want to do that), but it also has a lot of standard RTS elements in it.

The persistant hero and core units that level with you raises it up some. It's a good blast but certainly no Warcraft.

Did i mention Original War has solar powered buggies of machine gun death? And experience points? Yum.

The search I did took me by an old Gamespot review where it ranked in the 8's and was followed up by a bunch of 9's from the actual gamers.

I also saw screen shots.

Plus you compared it to GCII so, all combined, that was enough to sell it for $18 NZD.

This is what your on about http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/original_war

I was just looking at the box shot yesterday thinking to myself that it was going to hold some significance in the near future and here I am being led back to it again today.

I didn't know that it was an RTS just that, for some reason, I had the urge photo shoot the box art into memory.

GoG's quoting and thread combing stands as perfect example to my philosophy that enforcing too much order on any given situation just generates more chaos.

You're welcome - I kinda thought that the game was pretty mainstream though.

You can get the first one for free through FilePlanet but they'll make you perform stupid human tricks for it and they don't include the expansion.
