Hello!
I would like to receive some recommendations for RPG maker games. Ive just bought Cthulhu Saves the World and felt HUNGER for old style (NES alike) RPGs!

So, do you play such games? Which are the best?
My favorite is Deadly Sins 2 because of how it doesn't feel like an RPG maker game much. The other popular ones are Aveyond, aimed at a female audience but still enjoyable, and Laxius Force, never played these but heard good things, which are both good starting points.

Thank you! I will try all of them :-)

edit: but i would like to get recommendations for FREE games. As I can see, deadly sin 2 costs 19,95 USD which is wayyy too much.

Aveyond mentioned above and other Amaranth Games are good choice, although I must say I kind of lost interest in RPG Maker games in the last few years.

Yeah Aveyond is pretty alright for a jRPG. I quite like it even if it's cliche in parts.

Weird, I bought it for 10 near release. Must have been some sale. Anyways, check here for Aveyond games if you want some cheap ones.

Can't help you on free ones but check out some of the various forums the engine has and you are bound to find a few good ones.

Yeah, there are many games on RPG maker site, but I don't know which are good, because ratings are not helpful (low amount of votes)

I need to play some free games FIRST, then decide wheter to buy something similar or not.

I've bought Cthulhu Saves the world and Breath of Death VII for 2 euros in total, so 20 USD is a killer price to me :P I'm not THAT interested in old-style RPG games yet ;-)
In my opinion Eternal Eden is BY FAR the best RPG Maker game. It has so much to do, to collect, to find out, loads of quests, puzzles and has realy nice twists and turns. I've played A LOT or RPG Maker games and this one really stands out!

Oh and the best FREE NES RPG kinda game is Dragon Quest: Venaitura:

20 is way too much for a game like this. My limit is 10 if the reviews are glowing. The Aveyond games I linked are all $7 and DRM-free as far as I know.

If you are unsure it is standard practice to include an hour demo with nothing locked. That should be sufficient time to figure things out given not much changes since JRPGs are very 'by the numbers' so to speak.

Edit: I remembered a free one Rampant Coyote featured on his site. The Last Scenario is the name and it can be found here.

Yeah, I will try that 1-hour trials also. And thanks for the link to amazon. 7 bucks is a fair price for such game, and if i like the demo, Ill maybe buy the full game

I dunno how well this answers your question but Game Dev Story is FUCKING AWESOME.

I just don't know if you can get it outside the Apple App store - I have an iPhone 4 and love that game to bits. Just got Pocket Academy today by the same group that made GDS.

HIGHLY recommend these.
It's been a long time since I played an RPGMaker game... the only ones I can recommend (because I didn't play many) are the Legion Saga games. They were made in RPGMaker 2000, so they're only 320x240 but I remember them being pretty good.

They're listed as having SecuROM on GamersGate... =(

Hm,Deadly Sin: Shining Faith and Laxius Force has it listed also. I specifically remember looking for traces of Securom on Deadly Sin and finding nothing. Maybe its a Gamersgate specific thing for RPGmaker games?

If you want to test it try downloading the demo, which is the full game but locked down until you enter a code, for one of the games and see if it has Securom. I doubt its in there for the other versions since indies use the engine because it is cheap and Securom costs good $$ from my understanding.

I doubt it's GamersGate specific. AFAIK, GG doesn't add any DRM (apart from the annoying encryption the downloader puts on the setup file) and just sells whatever the developer gives them.

There is a chance that GamersGate is just wrong and the games are DRM-free. I've had that with other games on there before, where some said they had DRM when they didn't and some said they didn't when they did.
I can't really help on which are good but Big Fish Games have them for $7($5 for a first time purchase).

Anyone buy any RPGmaker games from them or Amazon? I want to think they must be edited or something because of the big price difference between and places like Aldorlea and Amaranth.
