Trajhenkhetlive: I still have to see the Hills Have Eyes and any of the Saw movies or Hostel (I can't believe I still haven't seen those). The original Hellraiser I would highly recommend, but it's from the late 80's. Human Centipede I wasn't a huge fan of but it is a rather novel film. Thanks to this thread I can see what I missed out on. Pontypool was pretty neat, forgot to recommend that one.
Pontypool is absolutely fantastic, one of the best movies (let alone horror movies) of the last 30 years. It is so different from the book, but that just increases the value of reading the book AND seeing the movie. Also it has Georgina Reilly (Yowzah! She's one hot tamale, and a great actress). I love it's unconventional story, great atmosphere and fantastic characters.

Great movie but I like many others still don't get the ending bit.

Schnuff: The Thing (original)

amok: The original from 1951? Or the 1983 Carpenter remake

(because to be honest, the 1951 version was not really that good. It was a thinly veiled film about the "red threat"....)
For a B Movie the original is very good and a real classic movie.
The remake is good and closer to the short story of Campbell Jr. 'Who Goes There' (you should read it) but its more into special effects. No i like the old one more...and I've seen it when i was about 7 years old ....greater impact :p

edit:
don't forget that most of those films from the 50's were about the red danger

I have read it :)

Though as a film, I prefer Carpenters '83 version. The '51 was just a bit too blatantly political for me to enjoy...

[spoiler]
If you mean the post credits scene, due to what was said over the ending credits with the virus still spreading I assume it is possible it means that it got them and that was a metaphor for their insanity. Either that or a purposeful "what the fuck" moment just to mess with people. I prefer to assume the latter and that the movie ended with them being saved, but the world being doomed.

The director discussed the ending a bit in this interview; also to make more "sense" of Pontypool the post-credit sequence (YouTube it if missed) drives things home more.

"The existence for it is sort of buried in there, well the title of the book sort of suggests it, Pontypool Changes Everything, and one of the things I’ve always love about the notion of this, is that the virus could effect something as abstract as the English language, it can leap into reality itself. Change the fabric of how reality is perceived."

Thanks, I'll check it out tomorrow. I'm way to tired to even begin contemplating that movie right now which I mean as a huge compliment. How many horror films make you think that much not to mention about what it makes you think about? Shit, you'll go mad just trying to get your head around it. :D
No one mentioned having watched the french film Martyrs Seriously, watch it, it's something else and I don't say it lightly.
I'd also recommend Martyrs. Some other flicks I'd recommend.

1) The seasoning house (It is more of a revenge flick but I thought it was pretty darn good - the protagonist is a deaf and mute girl - hard to watch in places)
2) A tale of two sisters (This you have gotta watch)
3) Dead Silence ( Ghost story)
4) The Midnight Meat train (One of the better clive barker on screen adaptations)
5) Cabin Fever 3 (If you haven't seen earlier iterations then you might want to check those out too)

Some classics:

1)Dellamore Dellamorte (A personal favourite)
2)Tombs of the blind dead (love this one)

Horror comedies.
1)Tucker and Dale vs evil (I love this one)
2) Trollhunter (Bloody Hillarious)

Awesome, I'll have to watch this later, thank you for posting. I still need to get a copy of the movie on DVD (or Blu-ray) later. I always catch it on Space, but it would be nice to have a copy of my own for the shelf.
House Hunting (2012) was nice. I am too lazy to list out other ones right now, but I'll add to this later.
Just saw Uzumaki. That ending. Straight 'NOPE' material.

SCPM: I recommend the 2007 Spanish film [REC]
I second this. Much better than the American remake Quarantine.

I recommend the (1st) remake of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and the prequel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006) ).

In addition, I recommend :
- Wolf Creek (HIGHLY)
- Dead Snow
- The Crazies
- Masters of Horror series (Especially the episode HPL's "Dreams in the Witchhouse")
- Dagon
- Rose Red / The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer

I could recommend a lot more if I broke from the timeframe you specified (post-2000). If I were you, I'd avoid any trendy horror movies like Mama, Cabin in the Woods, or Parastupid Activity if you want real horror.

Theta_Sigma: The Whisperer in Darkness (another done by the HPLHS)
I also recommend this.

Some of my favorites:

Rosemary's Baby - creepy, actually scary with one scene that really gave me shivers

The Thing (82') - Kurt's beard is epic, good plot and the monster was fantastic

Zombieland - good over the top fun
