Crysis 1 was better than far cry only thing that was horrible was crysis 2 and even that was a good game.

Kinda sad that Far Cry 2 is called Crysis and Boiling Point 2 is called Far Cry 2 :D
Fuckin' Kingpin is fuckin' difficult, and if ya fuckin' don't fuckin' like over the fuckin' top cussin', you'll fuckin' hate it.

Oslin007: There are quite a lot of shooters on GOG and as i fairly young gamer (19) i havent heard of a lot of em. so what do u think about them? are they any good? im thinking of games like, shogo, chaser, iron storm, painkiller, kingpin and perhaps even MDK and second sight
Aha, my area of expertise!

Painkiller and Unreal are, in my opinion, the two best FPSs on GOG, followed up by the Serious Sam games and Far Cry (a sandbox game that plays out as a visceral hybrid of cat-and-mouse stealth and tactical action). Alien Shooter 2 is most definitely worth a look as well (Alien Shooter 1 is significantly less spectacular). If you want a little more of a tactical bent, Operation Flashpoint (aka ARMA Gold Edition) is packed with content and is incredibly deep to boot (envision just about any modern combat scenario and you can probably do it). Rainbow Six is also good, but runs into some compatibility issues and lacks anything in the way of visceral excitement, mostly being a game of careful planning. If you're a long range kind of guy, Sniper Elite offers very realistic sniping, and is only hampered by some wonky stealth and a biting difficulty. Either of the Unreal Tournament games are fantastic for multiplayer. UT 2004 is packed to the bursting point with content, while UT99 boasts a smaller file size and much lighter system requirements (and has more "normal" servers and a better feel in my opinion). Also consider picking up Shogo. It has innumerable flaws, but it's also damn charming and endearing, and makes going berserk with a huge mech a lot of fun.

If you're looking for even older shooters, Blood is your best choice, with Redneck Rampage as a close second. Oh, and how could I forget Rise of the Triad! It's outdated and archaic by today's standards, but has a really weird engaging quality. Plus, more levels than you could ever hope to play, and a random level generator to boot.

I would stay away from Blood II (it's absolutely broken).

My suggestion would be to pick up both Painkiller (if you have the connection/system to run it) and Unreal immediately. Also get one of the Unreal Tournament games for a quick multiplayer fix, Rise of the Triad for simple old-school fun, and ARMA for when you're looking for tactical depth. That covers all the basics. Or if you absolutely MUST only get one game, go for Painkiller or Unreal.
Serious Sam, Serious Sam, Serious Sam. No story but who cares? Best action shooter in ages. Painkiller's a nice runner-up, but no contest.

Far Cry is great for a silly convoluted story and sandbox exploration. Second half is fine, just very difficult when you're first fighting the melee enemies without the right weapons. Supposed to be harrowing, succeeds. Use chokepoints and mounted weapons whenever possible. And the last couple showdowns are fierce, with rockets flying everywhere. You'll remember them for a long time after beating them.

ARMA's probably next best bet. Most of the other stuff in the thread is fine too, just dated. Shogo's pretty frustrating and ugly, I wouldn't recommend it above others.

I disagree. Serious Sam is a fine series, and certain worthy of standing up with the best of the "mob based" shooters, but Painkiller is just something truly special.

Of course, this is mostly personal opinion :P. I just love the whole artstyle and "feel" of Painkiller, and I like how the combat is a little more focused on the brutality of mowing down countless foes rather than the strict control necessary (which is Serious sam's main focus).

hedwards: Personally, I liked Unreal more than Quake,

StingingVelvet: Interesting. I have Unreal and Unreal 2 on some retail compilation they released a while back. I have never really played them that much, but I was a super Quake and Doom fan back in the day. Guess I should fire up Unreal and have a go...
Unreal is amazing. One of my top 5 favorite FPSs (which are Painkiller, Unreal, AvP1, Quake, and STALKER Call of Pripyat)

I'm enjoying Painkiller so much that I'm still trying to play it even though it made me throw up and nearly have a fit.
I don't really see why people are saying Painkiller is mindless. It's "KILL KILL KILL" but that doesn't mean you can just space out while playing or anything. Especially at the higher difficulties, it can get pretty crazy, particularly if you're going for some of the more unusual card conditions. To me it's a lot like Descent: lots of bad guys to be murdered, and really cool-looking levels to murder them in.

Stay away from the sequels, though. They've made several of them, and they're all pretty terrible, mostly because they're basically just fanmade maps cobbled together without proper testing or QA.

It starts off really hard because guns and ammo are REALLY limited but once the game gives you some kind of normal arsenal it gets pretty standard - only wid moar swears, yo!
Saying that I may have been playing it on Easy, can't remember, its been a while...
(just gota brainfreeze and forgot how to quote...)

"If you like shooter that tickle your IQ, I would recommend Sacrifice and Giants: Citizen Kabuto. Everything else I would say is your "standard shooter" of it's time. My two choices will always stand out as non-standard, either in the story, the humour, the creatures in the game, the originality and so on.. "

YEah i got giants, sacrifice, realms of the haunting and outcast aswell. havent played much but giants seems awesome, just got into the reaper girl which at least in the first mission wasnt that fun though. outcast seems epic as well, the others i havent tried yet. I acan also recommend incoming which in my opinion is reaally fun, simple as hell but u certainly feel like a bad ass mowing all these alien crafts down. The desperate but encouraging voice shouting "Incoming!" never gets old

Funny thing about Giants is when you get to the RTS stages, the rest of the game (except for the water racing parts which are an interesting diversion) seems like one big tutorial for it but then there's only a handful of RTS levels before its all over!
Good game though, fun and different!
might just add that blood is truly awesome - thanks guys! modern thing to be able to save anywhere makes the game a breeze!:D:D
Duke Nukem 3D
One Unit Whole Blood
Painkiller Black Edition
Rainbow Six
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division

Top 5 imo, no special order.
