Oslin007: There are quite a lot of shooters on GOG and as i fairly young gamer (19) i havent heard of a lot of em. so what do u think about them? are they any good? im thinking of games like, shogo, chaser, iron storm, painkiller, kingpin and perhaps even MDK and second sight
Aha, my area of expertise!
Painkiller and Unreal are, in my opinion, the two best FPSs on GOG, followed up by the Serious Sam games and Far Cry (a sandbox game that plays out as a visceral hybrid of cat-and-mouse stealth and tactical action). Alien Shooter 2 is most definitely worth a look as well (Alien Shooter 1 is significantly less spectacular). If you want a little more of a tactical bent, Operation Flashpoint (aka ARMA Gold Edition) is packed with content and is incredibly deep to boot (envision just about any modern combat scenario and you can probably do it). Rainbow Six is also good, but runs into some compatibility issues and lacks anything in the way of visceral excitement, mostly being a game of careful planning. If you're a long range kind of guy, Sniper Elite offers very realistic sniping, and is only hampered by some wonky stealth and a biting difficulty. Either of the Unreal Tournament games are fantastic for multiplayer. UT 2004 is packed to the bursting point with content, while UT99 boasts a smaller file size and much lighter system requirements (and has more "normal" servers and a better feel in my opinion). Also consider picking up Shogo. It has innumerable flaws, but it's also damn charming and endearing, and makes going berserk with a huge mech a lot of fun.
If you're looking for even older shooters, Blood is your best choice, with Redneck Rampage as a close second. Oh, and how could I forget Rise of the Triad! It's outdated and archaic by today's standards, but has a really weird engaging quality. Plus, more levels than you could ever hope to play, and a random level generator to boot.
I would stay away from Blood II (it's absolutely broken).
My suggestion would be to pick up both Painkiller (if you have the connection/system to run it) and Unreal immediately. Also get one of the Unreal Tournament games for a quick multiplayer fix, Rise of the Triad for simple old-school fun, and ARMA for when you're looking for tactical depth. That covers all the basics. Or if you absolutely MUST only get one game, go for Painkiller or Unreal.
