Yes, that's another pointless post, caused this time by me testing my CoLinux setup.
The attached image looks almost like somebody playing normal Unreal under Windows, right? Well, that couldn't be further from the truth:
The basis is indeed WindowsXP
Which runs CoLinux
Which runs Ubuntu
Which runs Wine (plain, without any additional libraries)
Which runs Unreal
With all input/output being sent over the network using XMing.
So now I'm running a Windows application using Wine under Windows.
Interestingly, I think this could actually make sense. As many games are tightly integrated with the OS and require specific libraries, settings and so on, this is a way to give them their own special place, separate from the main OS, where they can't affect the rest of the system and changes to the system can't affect them.
P.S. I'm running Unreal with software rendering here, however OpenGL and Direct3D are also possible.

Great news! Now, if only I could find a MacBook that could run modern games well, be upgradable and run all my Windows apps without taking five million light years. I'm aspiring to work in the film industry, and what everyone tells me is I need a MacBook so I can run Final Cut Pro. I could try to get a Pro, but with the salary I get from running cameras at my local church, it's gonna be a while before I ever get close to the price point of that monster...
You don't have to use a MacBook... Adobe Premiere and AfterEffects are still very much a standard that exists in the movie industry, as well as various Discreet products.
But yes, Macs do offer a better overall user experience and with Wine (Cider), they've become a possible alternative for non-hardcore gamers.

Sweet! Now I can get a Windows laptop and still have access to all my Steam games. Still, it will probably cost me big, since I want it to run the latest games at the highest quality. I'm what you could call a gaming nutcase. Let's hope whatever job I end up getting after I enter and exit college can pay for my expensive habit.

FCP is good and it's a damn good app to work with - granted. However it's by no means something that you need to have in order to be a good film maker. I myself, doing loads of work in advertising, also work with many film editors. Only one or two of them are actually using a Mac. As hansschmucker stated in the previous post Adobe apps are the world-wide standard, not FCP. I suspect that the main reason behind this whole get-a-mac thing is you living in the US. Here in Europe Macs are even more expensive and there are very few people willing to pay extra (and so much more extra) just for another app that basically does the same thing as its counterparts.
I could try to get a Pro, but with the salary I get from running cameras at my local church, it's gonna be a while before I ever get close to the price point of that monster...

Tell me about it... I don't know if you're aware, but there's a project called OSX86 that deals with running OSX on PCs. It's obviously illegal, but it pisses me off to see benchmarks sent by people running OSX on regular PCs that are working so much better and faster than Apple hardware. And so I ask you: why should I bother buying a mac if it's clear that it's price is blown out of proportions?

Better games than heroin, I always said.

my macbook runs L4D.. on lowest settings.
Why do I have a macbook? it has a better chipset than my previous laptop..
macbook = intel 965
toshiba a205 etc = intel 945
means I can run higher end games, I can play doom 3 and all sorts of things just fine.. it's fantastic.
Garrys mod has issues, but I can play Portal, hl2ep2, and tf2 fine
sure, low resolutions, but I'd rather be able to play on my laptop than not.
yeah, I could play on my quadcore desktop, but i don't get to spend a lot of time with it, because I can't sit up there and watch my kids at the same time. hahaha
also, my job offers support for osx, so it helps to know about it.

Doom 3's requirements seem really low though. I played it with my piece of garbage integrated nforce 405 card earlier this year and it ran great. Not as high a framerate as my current card affords, but I didnt know the difference then anyway. :)

well, like I said, I can run L4D.
that's about the most intensive game I have through steam, I am hoping they bring the unreal deal pack back, then I can see how UT3 works for it.. yeah, I could pull out my retail disc.. but it's not worth the hassle..
