Alrighty, I'm really annoyed that any community attempt to get a multiplayer game going usually never works. Why? Because [insert deity here] gave us those damn time zones, or because somebody's port is blocked and the servers don't work, or the threads just get buried into hell and whatnot. We need a central thread, folks, in order to get (semi) regular games going.

So here's how it's going to work. (Or not.)

Every so often, a bunch of us will go on IRC and bitch and whine and perhaps talk about a game we should play for multiplayer. It has to be old (old as in either on GOG or more than five years), and it has to be a game that people want to play. There's no point in me wanting to force, say, Far Cry on you if you want to play some RTS. Obviously, this game choosing thing shall be done democratically, with votes. Small stuff like hosting, time, and all that can be decided then.
A list of people who are definitely going to play, a list of people who are maybe going to play will be created. Each game session will have different people, so the lists will be erased and recreated each time. I think a way to announce games would be useful, but since 68.2838% of you are so anti-Steam, it's not going to be easy. We're using Xfire, guys.
Right now, I just want to know if you're up for this. If not, simply pick up a tomato and throw it at my head. (Not the nose, please.)
Where to learn of new game sessions:
Steam!
Xfire!
What we're playing this time:
Something. Sometime in the future.
Who's playing:
Some people.

Well, I did make that Hamachi thread. Comically enough, I did actually end up playing Descent 2 with someone from the UK because of it, though he just googled and found my thread here.

It's buried somewhere. Which is my point.

Exactly. So we need a place for us all to congregate and stuff. Steam is a nice place (we have the Steam group and all), but like I said, not everyone likes Steam, so another place that people are happy to use for us to spread the word is crucial, or else it's only the guys on Steam, and the GOG forum regulars who will know about the games.

You could stand on your roof with a loudspeaker

Or we need to get that Archangel Network thing going, maybe I can communicate to all of you with beep rhythms.
I'd be up for some UT 2004 or Dawn of War.
If we're not strictly adhering to the old games rule then you can add a few more games to that, including Quake Wars, L4D, Demigod, SinsOASE, DoW2 & Supreme Commander.
I'm also not on IRC, but a GOG Steam group might not be such a bad idea for the 31.7162% of us willing to tolerate it.

Well gven how much most people seem to hate/fear anything new or different on here maybe morse code or telegrams would be a good idea.
Stickying a generic multiplayer thread would maybe work though. I mean there is IRC and twiter facebook steam etc. but not everyone likes steam I cant be arsed with twitter etc. So like it or not we probably stand the best chance of organising it through here. However like i said it would need stickying to avoid inevitable burying.

If we really want to cater for the technophobes, I suppose I should start learning smoke signals.
I still think that a Steam group wouldn't be such a bad idea. It would be a passive advert for GOG, if nothing else.

But wouldn't technophones NOT play games in the first place?

Well there is already a GOG group. So if anything is organised we can already stick adverts etc. up on that. The problem is getting it out to a wider audience. But yes its a start at least

Ironically, their computers really are steam powered.

I should have known. Well, I've joined it now. Yeah, I'm sure we can use that. It seems to have enough members already.

For my major networking project I wanted to find a way to build a tin can & string network, modulating the signal to audio through a speaker in a tin can, vibrating it across a string to another tin can with a mic and seeing if I could reliably send data that way. Predictably I was voted down for thinking of something too hard but how awesome would that have been? Playing a networked game of NWN2 over a network made of string and old soup tins
