I would absolutely recommend Dungeons of Dredmor.
The game is VERY funny and VERY well-made.
The ancient evil that is Dredmor has risen once again, and the land is once again in need of a hero. Unfortunately, all it has is you.
The graphic style is deliberately made somewhat simple, but do not let it fool you - it is not an easy game to play. You definitely will die there as much as in any other roguelike game. However, what does make dying sweeter (sounds weird, huh) is that the game does not take itself seriously. Starting from the "Congratulations! You have died!" welcome-to-the-end screen and beyond that in choosing the skills for your character.
How about specializing in something like Fleshsmithing and Necronomiconomics? No? Than how about Emomancy and Killer Vegan? The choice is yours. But all those countless combinations make re-starting the game with a new set of skills equally rewarding as playing it. Anyway, if you hate dying there are always three difficulty levels available along with a Perma-Death switch-off.
Also this game would reward you for reading - not that you HAVE to do it, but if you WILL you will find lots of wacky things around you in the dungeon. Killing a bunch of Sickly Diggles ("Sickly Diggle (Poingus Poingus) A strange little bird-thing that tunnels through walls with its odd, rubbery nasal appliance. This one looks like it has some kind of disease." with a Crude Stone Axe ("By paleolithic standards this axe is a high tech terror-weapon. By yours, however, it belongs in a museum.") and getting Diggle flu? Yeah that could happen.
The rogue mechanics is also all there - with lots of tinkering, brewing and mushroom growing.
You will mainly have to survive on booze and cheese, so I hope you like those. There are at least a couple of dozens of various cheeses in the game and even more drinks (mostly alcohol-containing).
The only faulty point in it I could find via reviews was "it can get too repetitive". Well, I guess this is because of the genre - rogue-like games DO tend to make you grind (even though in recent versions there is a "less grinding-same exp" switch).
If you want to know how the games was.... created? (after reading the interview you would surely think that "emerged from chaos by accident" would be more appropriate) you can read this

The best video review of the game for me is this one by TotalBiscuit
