What's so surprising here? Anybody who has had access to the internet for the past 5 years should have realized by now that Activision is all about milking successfull IPs until their metaphorical udders resemble metaphorical dry, hardened stalactites, while risk-taking and creativity are words you only utter on staff meetings if you're looking for a new job.
The Guitar Hero craze has somewhat died down, and since it seems the market is (for now) inundated with sleek, cheap party games and crappy plastic guitars, it's time to milk the newest massive success not created by Activision. And that happens to be CoD.
CoD: Black Ops, probably followed by CoD: Cold War Ops, then CoD: Alien Invasion Ops, and let us not forget CoD: Mafia Wars, a spin-off action-adventure simulation rpg, which fails to hit sales expectations and has it's expansion, CoD: Mafia Wars: Capo of Corleone cut halfway through development.
Then in three to five years, people are basically fucking fed up with CoD, and it's time to milk something else again, probably Motion Guitar Legend.

kiefer sutherland's next starring project?
Is it odd that Ive never played a single military themed FPS and i love FPS games... unless Crysis counts... the closest i ever came was a demo for world at war...
Are there any COD collections out there that i could grab to get a taste of them?
edit: after hitting google there is a COD war chest with 1, exp, and 2 for $20.... they linked to medal of honor war chest as well.. is MOH just a COD clone? if so i say why the hell not... i'll get both war chests... i like me some nice FPS games and thats like 6 for $40 cant beat it!
edit2: it seems MOHAA was what started all this war gaming insanity... so COD ripped them off lol... i wonder what the medal of honor guys are doing now after they pioneered the genre and stopped delivering it seems

MOHAA was first and the first installment (including the expansions) are still classics. It went downhill from there for MOHAA, mostly because most of the original developers left to make ... CoD.

The Medal of Honor guys left Electronic Arts to form their own studio so as they could develop a WW2 themed FPS in a way they were happy with which lead to the founding of the now infamous Infinity Ward and the (terribly named) Call of Duty franchise which has now transformed into the Modern Warfare series.
The first Call of Duty and it's expansion I can't recommend enough, absolutely brilliant games and the best of the Medal of Honor and Call of Duty games in my opinion.
The sequel is also good but nothing more than a visual upgrade to the first Call of Duty if you ask me.
Modern Warfare is a good game but I seem to be in the minority that think the singly player portion of MW2 was pretty dull and it's multiplayer is a massively overhyped explosives spamfest.
alright I'll use my Amazon-Coupon and get them... always wondered about actual progression on war FPS... so MOH then COD... it'll be interesting to see the evolution of them while i play. Thanks.

KavazovAngel: Damn. I must have missed that one.
Where can I pirate it from?

KavazovAngel: Hahah!

It's a free game that tells the Columbine Massacre through the teens' eyes. No link to be provided since, well...might not go over well. I actually enjoyed it.

StealthKnight: This restructuring has certainly killed off all potential creativity in activision.
avatar
Gremmi: Seriously, how can you actually know that for sure? What if they put out some genuinely great games? Are they instantly bad solely by virtue of having a Call of Duty moniker?
I don't understand people who endlessly decry sequels and franchises without them even being released (or in this case even announced), as if only original IP is ever worth looking at.

Sequels are not bad but making a sequel year after year is going to make the franchise stale. Some may be good but there probably will be many that are same old and dull. With the way activision and boby kotech act, I believe that they will abuse their series until they are dull.

StealthKnight: Are they trying to break the world record of games in a series using the cod franchise? This restructuring has certainly killed off all potential creativity in activision. I used to be excited about the games but now there is no point to buying them at launch as a new and potential better one will be released next year. I'll be waiting for COD games to be $5 before I will buy them.
Save The COD from being an endangered franchise. Don't by the Spam!

Gundato: Yeah, damn them for making sequels and supporting franchises after the initial release.
Don't forget to boycott Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Both of those are trilogies :p
And damn them all to hell. If I had know we were getting a Fallout 2, I would never have bought 1. And I was so happy with Fallout 2 until Fallout 3 came. And now, I am going to go firebomb Bethesda for letting Obsidian release New Vegas.
Seriously, judge things on the merit of what they are. If you are afraid to play a MP game because it won't be around in ten years, just go play CS 1.6. Because even if it is the last game in the series, something else will come around (or the community will just die).
And if you are afraid to play an SP game because a sequel came out: Really? Has MW2 ruined the fun of riding in a jeep with Steve Blum way back in CoD1?

That is incredibly rude and uncalled for. You need to think about how you act before you talk to someone.
I'm not against sequels being released in anytime frame but the potential abuse of them. If games are going to be released every year with similar content then I'm going to be picky and chose certain ones and ignore the rest until their prices are really low.
Now if they are going to release multi-player games year after year that is same yet separate from the previous game then it kills of a lot of the community unless the sequels are bad or people have a preference for a certain version. If that is going to happen then why should a buy every game. It's a waste of my money and it kills my interest. Other people probably feel that way too.

What, so it's not dull yet?
When Treyarch put out COD 3 for the first time in the franchise, it was just awful. Awful upon awful upon awful. Then IW made up for that by making COD 4 which was just awesome for multiplayer... then they screwed us over again on the PC. I have MW2 for PC and I can tell you, I have had my share of horrible ping, and since I play around midnight or so and that IWNet selects players by location you're ALWAYS playing with the same people, so much so I can recall the other people's names.
Hopefully Treyarch will know what they are doing this time, and you know, save the series from total destruction from Activision's idiocy.
And make a good story that's less Michael Bay, thank you.
Get the Call of Duty War Chest (or something). Call of Duty and the add-on United Offensive were/are exceptional. Call of Duty 2 is great too. Plus with all the MODs that came out for those 2 games, the games are replayable many times over. Try the "realism" MODS for these games, the difficulty goes way up. There are even MODS for modern combat campaigns (before COD 4 was even thought of), Korean War campaigns, Operation Overlord etc.
Definitely in my top 10 games of the last decade.
